Auto Express Car Reviews Text: Ross Pinnock / Photos: Dominic FraserJuly 2007 Rating: The V50 has always been a handsome estate. Unfortunately, it’s never been a particularly big oneSporty, stylish and practical – the new Volvo V50 is as versatile as a Swiss army knife. But can it cut through the competition on UK roads? The Swedish brand has revised its smallest estate range with the addition of two new engines. Alongside a fresh entry-level 2.0-litre petrol unit, there’s now the option of the potent D5 diesel powerplant for the first time.Cosmetic revisions are limited, and only true Volvo fans will spot the wider grille, plus the revamped light covers and bumper at the front. It’s much the same story at the back, where new lamp clusters featuring LED bulbs are the only obvious difference.None of this is bad news, though, because the V50 has always been a handsome estate. Unfortunately, it’s never been a particularly big one – and, disappointingly, the modest 417-litre boot capacity is the same as on the previous model. At least it expands to a more useful 1,307 litres with the rear seats folded down.Opt for the SE Sport trim of the car we drove, and you get large 18-inch wheels and a full bodykit to help set your V50 apart from lesser variants. The cabin also features leather upholstery and some of the most comfortable seats on the market. Inside, storage is improved, thanks to large door bins, while solid build quality and superior materials reinforce the V50’s premium feel. Our test car also had the advanced Blind Spot Information System (BLIS). At £650 it’s not cheap, but the clever set-up alerts the driver to objects in the over-the-shoulder blind spot.Rear-facing digital cameras mounted in the door mirrors monitor the areas where your vision is restricted, and flash warning lights positioned on the A-pillars if it’s unsafe to change lanes. The same system is available in the XC90, and although it takes some getting used to, it eases some of the strain of motorway driving. In comparison, the D5 engine is a familiar piece of technology that has been tried and tested in cars across the Volvo model range. The power output has been reduced for the V50, although it still produces 178bhp and 350Nm of torque – which is enough to propel the revised load-lugger from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds. Thanks largely to its five-cylinder configuration, the oil-burner also has a distinctive growl – but under full throttle the noise is all too noticeable. Once cruising, refinement improves, making the Volvo a relaxed motorway cruiser.Sport models like ours come fitted with a chassis package designed to improve handling – although as the V50 shares underpinnings with the Ford Focus, it’s stable and sure-footed anyway. Unfortunately, the steering feels a little numb. Still, the Volvo is composed in bends, and despite its large 18-inch alloy wheels, the V50’s ride is impressive. Combine this with the brand’s smooth Geartronic automatic transmission, and the estate is a soothing car to drive.Although lower-spec variants argu-ably make more sense than the top-of-the-range SE Sport, the revised V50 is a desirable family car. Overall, it’s a solid alternative to contenders from the likes of Honda, Saab and BMW.But it’s not cheap. If you want your Volvo with as much equipment as the option-laden model here, you will have to spend £30,240! It’s not difficult to find cheaper alternatives with more tempting prices.Rival: BMW 3-Series TouringCompact executive models don’t come much better than BMW’s class-leading 3-Series Touring. It’s great to drive, has plenty of room inside and is refined. What’s more, it’s available with some of the best diesel engines money can buy. The punchy D5 diesel is a welcome addition that provides solid performance and economy. But while the Volvo looks smart and is a capable all-rounder, it’s pricey, especially in top SE Sport spec. Inside, Light Oak trim now covers the floating centre console and doors. The S40-based estate has been on sale for four years, although the changes to its looks are unlikely to cause much of a stir. At the front, there has been a minor update, with the car getting a slightly wider grille, new headlamp covers and a reprofiled bumper. It's a similarly subtle approach at the rear, where the lights feature LED bulbs and brake indicators which flash in an emergency stop. Otherwise, the car looks much the same as before, which is no bad thing.Inside, Light Oak trim now covers the floating centre console and doors. Cubby space has also been improved, with larger door bins and cup-holders. Luggage capacity is unchanged at a less-than-impressive 417 litres. But that's not to say the car isn't practical; the upright tailgate does mean you get a usefully square load area. Everything feels well put together, and material quality is on a par with that of class-leading German premium rivals. The V50's seats are also among the most comfortable around.Under the facelifted nose, Volvo's 180bhp D5 diesel unit is now available with the slick-shifting, six-speed manual transmission. The engine also offers a boost in torque output from 350Nm to 400Nm, so performance is impressive, particularly when overtaking. Under full throttle, the oil-burner even has a distinctive engine note.As the V50 shares its underpinnings with the Ford Focus, it's entertaining to drive, too. The car remains composed through corners and provides plenty of grip. So although its size makes it something of a one-off, the Volvo is still a class act. Rivals from BMW and Audi have a stronger image and offer a larger boot capacity, but the Volvo remains comfortable and desirable. The new diesel engine and gearbox combination provides gutsy and efficient performance as well. It sprints from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds - but feels quicker - on its way to a top speed of 140mph if on a German autobahn. You might think fuel economy would be the last thing on Volvo's mind given these stats, but the car returns a healthy average figure of 40.4mpg.Volvo also uses the five-cylinder engine in its S60 and S80 models where its reliability has been proven.Despite being Volvo's smallest estate there's a big focus on safety with the V50 achieving a five-star score in Euro NCAP crash tests. Every model is fitted with front, side and curtain airbags, as well as stability control. To deter the criminal element of society, deadlocks and an integrated stereo are included. The car is a joy to drive with motorways and country lanes being handled with equal aplomb. There's minimum body roll and more grip on display than a drowning man clutching a lifebuoy. The steering gives plenty of information to the driver about what is happening on the road and the ride is firm without being uncomfortable. The cabin is a peaceful place to be as little noise is given access while visibility for driver and passengers is good. It's not the roomiest estate for shopping and luggage that I've ever driven but the rear space is a decent shape. It caters for all a normal family can throw at it with a capacity of 417 litres with the seats up.The interior generally is as classy as the exterior with luxury features including leather upholstery. Quality fixtures and fittings are also included and everything seems to be well built. There's more than enough head and legroom for four adults to sit in comfort with a good driving position easily achieved thanks to fully adjustable powered seat and steering wheel. The centre console is slimmer than Twiggy, but the controls are a little fiddly to operate and the information display is a bit dull. There's plenty to play with however as all V50s are well equipped.Entry-level S models offer front and rear electric windows, electronic climate control, cruise control and remote central locking. Sport models add a sportier trim and suspension while extras on SE and SE Sport models include an upgraded stereo system and automatic wipers. Is the car worth the £26,000-plus Volvo wants you to pay? Well, the first thing to say is that cheaper options are available on the market - but the V50 is a quality motor offering high levels of standard equipment that goes some way to justifying the price-tag.Then there's the reliability and safety factors, both of which weigh in the V50s favour. If these are the boxes you want ticked then this car should be on your shortlist.FAST FACTSVolvo V50 D5 SE Sport 5dr autoPrice: £26,365Mechanical: 180bhp, 2,400cc, 5cyl diesel engine driving front wheels via 5spd automatic gearboxMax speed: 140mph0-62mph: 8.5 secsCombined mpg: 40.4Insurance group: 15CO2 emissions: 184g/kmBiK rating: 26%Warranty: 3yrs/ 60,000 miles, 3yrs paint, 8yrs anti-rust Words: Peter Keenan Keywords: volvo, v50 Rate this article: Login to rate this article...
