(March 2009) Volvo V70 2001 Volvo XC70 Manufacturer Volvo Cars Also called Volvo XC70 (crossover version) Production 1997–present Predecessor Volvo 850 Class Mid-size car / Executive car Body style(s) 5-door estate/wagon 5-door crossover Layout Front engine, front-wheel drive / four-wheel drive The Volvo V70 is a mid-size five-door estate car / station wagon manufactured by Volvo Cars since 1996. It is closely related to the S70, S60 and S80 saloons, as well as the four-wheel drive Cross Country (XC) and XC70. Since its inception, the V70 has evolved through three generations—notably, the second generation was designed by Peter Horbury.[1] Over 80% of V70s are sold in Europe, one third of this in Sweden, which is where the company is from. The Volvo V70 has been the best selling car in Sweden for many years.[citation needed] Contents 1 First generation (1997–2000) 1.1 First generation variants 1.2 First generation models 1.3 First generation straight-5 engines 1.4 Safety 2 Second generation (2000–2007) 2.1 Technical 2.2 Safety 3 Third generation (2007-present) 3.1 Comfort 3.2 Safety 3.3 V70 Plug-in Hybrid 4 References 5 External links [edit] First generation (1997–2000) First generation Also called Volvo V70-XC Production 1997–2000 Assembly Torslanda, Sweden, Ghent, Belgium, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Volvo Halifax Assembly Engine(s) 2.0 L 126 hp I5 2.4 L 162 hp I5 2.4 L 190 hp I5 2.5 L 190 hp I5 2.3 L 240 hp I5 2.3 L 250 hp I5 2.4 L 265 hp I5 2.5 L 140 hp I5 (diesel) Transmission(s) 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic Wheelbase 2,664 mm (104.9 in) 1998 AWD: 2,662 mm (104.8 in) 1999-2000 AWD: 2,654 mm (104.5 in) Length 1998: 4,722 mm (185.9 in) 1999-2000: 4,729 mm (186.2 in) 1999-2000 XC: 4,735 mm (186.4 in) Width 1,760 mm (69.3 in) Height 1,427 mm (56.2 in) & 1,481 mm (58.3 in) R: 1,453 mm (57.2 in) The original V70 was a development of the Volvo 850 estate car (station wagon) and saloon (sedan) range. The new name reflected Volvo's new strategy of naming vehicles depending on size and body style. Thus, the 850 was deemed to be a relative size 70. The name is then appended with the type of vehicle. So the station wagon adopted V (for Versatility), S (for Saloon), and C (for the new Coupé); these cars are respectively known as V70, S70 and C70. There were 1,800 improved and new parts in the design from the original 850, including upgraded passive and active safety, better handling and new engines. Gone were the 850's square edges and replaced by rounded corners to suit the late 1990s style trend. Other changes included a new 'family face' for the V/S/C70 models, colour-coded bumpers, clear indicator lenses, and a new dashboard fascia and materials. However, on the whole, one could say the car was similar to its predecessor, but nevertheless, a successful facelift. [edit] First generation variants V70 variants included Torslanda — named after its assembly plant, Torslandaverken — SE and CD. Option packages included: Sports - with alloy wheels, rear spoiler, and fog lamps Comfort - child seat, air conditioning or electric sunroof, and trip computer Luxury - leather upholstery with electric driver's seat, climate control and cruise control, wood fascia trim, RTI, and rear seat entertainment Estate - roof rails, self-levelling rear suspension, and luggage net Winter - headlamp wash/wipe, heated front seats and traction control Design - red wood/leather steering wheel, red wood-effect trim, and leather upholstery. The T5 was equipped with a sport-tuned high pressure turbocharged 2.0 or a 2.3 litre engine with maximum boost pressure set at 10.5 pounds per square inch (72 kPa), and 'turbine' alloy wheels, whereas the LT models had a low pressure turbocharged 2.4 litre engine with maximum boost pressure at 7 to 8 pounds per square inch (48 to 55 kPa). The R was fitted with a full factory fitted body kit (chin spoiler and rear spoiler, anthracite alloy wheels) a range of unique colours. There were 3 phases of R-AWD produced for the United Kingdom market between 1997 and 2000: Phase 1: were produced from 1997 till February 1999 (UK P to S reg) and were available with either the B5234T-4 (2319cc) engine (18T turbo 250 bhp/350 N·m) and five-speed manual gearbox; or the B5234T-6 engine (16T turbo 240 bhp/310 N·m) and four-speed three-mode automatic gearbox. Both engines used the Bosch Motronic 4.4 engine management system. (0–60 7.3/8.1, 155/143 mph). 1999–2000 Volvo V70 station wagon (Australia) Phase 2: were produced from March 1999 (UK S to T reg) and were only available with the B5234T-8 (2319 cc) engine (18T turbo 250 bhp/310 N·m) and four-speed adaptive automatic gearbox. These cars use the Bosch Motronic ME7 engine management system with drive-by-wire throttle and variable exhaust camshaft valve timing. (0–60 7.8 143 mph). Phase 3: were produced from September 1999 till March 2000 (UK V to W reg) and were only available with the larger B5244RT (2435cc) engine (19T turbo 265 bhp/350 N·m) and five-speed adaptive automatic gearbox. Engine used stronger internal components. These also use the Bosch Motronic ME7 engine management system, drive-by-wire and VVT. These cars were fitted with twin tail pipes (first time Volvo fitted twin exhaust system), WHIPS system, and larger side SIPS airbags for head protection, and vented rear brake discs. (0–60 7.2 155 mph). Latest generation of Road Traffic Information Satellite Navigation used on the Phase III's, this is the same CD based system used by Volvo up until 2003 and on the C70 until 2005. Roof rails were changed now the same as V70XC. Altogether, Volvo sold 74 Phase III’s in the UK, split by colour: Black stone 5, Nautic Blue Pearl 10, Dark Olive Pearl 3, Silver Metallic 17, Laser Blue Metallic 33, Venetian Red Pearl 6 Trim and specification levels remained virtually unchanged throughout the 3 phases. Trim was Leather and Alcantara in either Beige or Grey/Black with aluminium trim on the dash and console (dark wood was an option on P1 and P2 cars). On P1 cars, the steering wheel was also leather/alcantara, but phase 2 and 3 had a thicker rimmed leather only wheel. Phase II and III had blue engine covers. Phase 3 cars had the option of contrasting grey/beige trim. These cars were virtually "fully-loaded" with very few options available (mainly pro-logic (£600), 6 CD boot mounted changer (£600), RTI-Satellite Navigation (£2500)) as they cost £37,000 when new. All phases were available with either 16" or 17" roadwheels in either silver or anthracite with a temporary spare wheel. The 17" wheels were £100 more expensive. Colour options were available as follows: Phase 1 : Saffron, Black Stone, Nautic Blue, Silver, Regency Red Phase 2 : Laser Blue, Black Stone, Nautic Blue Pearl, Silver Metallic, Cassis, Venetian Red Pearl, Dark Olive Green Phase 3 : Laser Blue, Black Stone, Nautic Blue Pearl, Silver Metallic, Venetian Red Pearl, Dark Olive Green [edit] First generation straight-5 engines 2.0 10v 2.0 Turbo 163 metric horsepower (120 kW; 161 hp) 2.3 2.3 Turbo 2.3 R 240 metric horsepower (177 kW; 237 hp) in 1998 2.3 R 250 metric horsepower (184 kW; 247 hp) in 1999 2.4 R 265 metric horsepower (195 kW; 261 hp) in 2000 2.5 10v 140 metric horsepower (103 kW; 138 hp) 2.5 20v 170 metric horsepower (125 kW; 168 hp) 2.5 Turbo 190 metric horsepower (140 kW; 187 hp) 2.5 AWD 193 metric horsepower (142 kW; 190 hp) 2.5 T5 (Turbo 5-cylinder) 225 metric horsepower (165 kW; 222 hp) 2.5 TDI (Audi engine) [edit] Safety Euro NCAP evaluated the S70 (saloon variant of V70) in 1998 awarding it 4 of 5 stars for adult occupant protection. The S70 received a total of 25 of 37 points and therefore four stars (25-32) in Euro NCAP's evaluation.[2] The S70 scored four of five stars for front impact protection for driver and front passenger in the NHTSA safety testing, and five out of five stars for driver and rear passenger side impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) granted the 850/S70 their highest rating of "good" for front crash protection. Rear crash protection was rated as "good".[3][4] 1999 and newer, prevents whiplash by a seatback hinge mechanism that is standard equipment. This new car dispensed with the boxy shape of Volvos before it to take on a curvy profile much like the S40/S60 series, and added a new more aggressively designed front end. Where the first generation V70 had a saloon variant (S70), the second generation lost the S70 as the new S80 was now seen to be the 'S70 for the new millennium'. The second generation of the V70 finished production for model year 2007. The V70 shares the same sheet metal ahead of the B-pillar with the Volvo S60, although the grilles are different, and the front bumpers are mildly different. The dashboard and the majority of the interior of both cars are the same. The V70 XC received a major upgrade on its suspension and equipped with 8.2 in (210 mm) minimum ground clearance. As was the case with all P2 platform Volvos, a minor refresh of the V70 occurred across all markets for the 2005 model year, which brought minor styling changes to the front fascia, tail lamps, along with several improvements and changes to the interior fittings. [edit] Technical In the US market the V70 is available as front or all-wheel drive (AWD) with a Geartronic five-speed automatic transmission. A five-speed manual transmission was offered on the base 2.4 version, but few dealers stocked it. As before, there is an AWD-only off-road version with raised suspension, plastic body cladding and an interior grab handle. This version previously known as the V70 XC (Cross Country) was renamed to XC70 for this new model line. Also following on from the previous generation was the use of five-cylinder, 20 valve inline transverse-mounted engines. All but the bottom range 2.4 employ turbochargers with either low- or high-pressure, depending on the model. The V70 five cylinder turbo engines in the US market are the base V70 2.5 litre light-pressure turbo straight-five engine with 211 metric horsepower (155 kW; 208 hp) at 5,000 rpm; and torque of 320 newton metres (236 lbf·ft) at 1,500–4,500 rpm, and the V70 T5 2.4 litre high-pressure turbo straight-five with 260 metric horsepower (191 kW; 256 hp) at 5,500 rpm; torque 350 newton metres (258 lbf·ft) at 2,100–5,000 rpm. For the US market, both of these engines are exclusively mated to a five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. This 2.4 litre high-pressure turbo straight-5 "T5" engine is used in a variety of Volvos, and as with most stock performance turbo engines the power output is quite limited by the stock Volvo engine tuning. The ultra high performance all-wheel drive V70R, using a 2.5L Turbocharged I5 litre engine in ultra high performance tune produces 300 metric horsepower (221 kW; 296 hp) and 400 newton metres (295 lbf·ft). The V70R is equipped with Volvo's 4C multi-mode suspension developed in conjunction with suspension experts Öhlins—allowing the driver to vary the cars handling depending on driving style and conditions. The V70R AWD has also larger Brembo brakes to provide high performance braking capabilities in line with its high performance characteristics. [edit] Safety Euro NCAP evaluated the S60 (saloon variant of V70) in 2001 awarding it 4 of 5 stars for adult occupant protection. The S60 scored 10 of 16 points in the front test and 16 of 16 in the side test. The car received 2 of 2 points available in the pole test. The S60 received a total of 28 of 37 points and therefore four stars (25-32) in Euro NCAP's evaluation.[6] The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluated the Volvo S60 (sedan variant). The S60 was granted the IIHS's highest rating of "good" in front and rear tests. The S60 was awarded the Institute's second highest rating of "acceptable" in the side test. However, an improvement in the driver dummy's pelvis/leg rating from "marginal" to "acceptable" would yield an overall "good" rating in the side test.[7] [edit] Third generation (2007-present) Third generation Volvo XC70 (US) Production 2007–present Assembly Torslanda, Sweden Jakarta, Indonesia (Indobuana Autoraya) Class Executive car Platform Y20 platform Engine(s) 2.0 L I4, 2.0 L I4 Flexifuel, 2.5 L I5 Turbo, 2.5 L I5 FT Flexifuel, 3.2 L I6, 3.0 L I6 Turbo, 1.6 L I4 diesel (DRIVe model), 2.0 L I4 diesel, 2.4 L I5 hp diesel Transmission(s) 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 5-speed automatic, 6-speed automatic Wheelbase 2,816 mm (110.9 in) XC: 2,815 mm (110.8 in) Length 4,823 mm (189.9 in) XC: 4,838 mm (190.5 in) Width 1,861 mm (73.3 in) , 2,106 mm (82.9 in) Including mirrors. The new car was aimed and equipped to be slightly more up-market than the previous model, albeit being of the same size. Despite this fact the rear-seat legroom was increased by two centimetres and a revised tailgate design increased the load area volume by 55 L. The tailgate had also had optional motorized lift and closing action. The Ford EUCD platform is used underneath the new V70, and much of the interior (other than the rear seats and loadbay) are shared with the second generation S80. Since the new V70 is only available as a front-wheel drive platform based on the new S80 platform, the US market V70/XC70 AWD are only available with the S80 FWD drivetrain, a 3.2 litre straight-six engine producing 238 metric horsepower (175 kW; 235 hp) at 6,200 rpm; torque of 320 newton metres (236 lb·ft) at 3,200 rpm - mated to a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The S80 AWD engine choices, a 3.0 litre turbo-six with 285 metric horsepower (210 kW; 281 hp) at 5,600 rpm, torque 400 newton metres (295 lb·ft) at 1,500–4,800 rpm, and a 4.4 litre V8 engine with 315 metric horsepower (232 kW; 311 hp) at 5,950 rpm, torque 440 newton metres (325 lb·ft) at 3,950 rpm are currently not available in the V70 since they require the S80 AWD platform. To date, there are no plans known to bring a high performance AWD V70 on the US market. The high performance V70R AWD, as well as the five-cylinder turbo engine range mated to a five-speed Geartronic automatic transmissions of the previous V70 generation were all discontinued. Even though it is the "corresponding" sedan, the US-market S60 series is still based on the older platform and offers two drivetrain options of older design, the 2.5 litre light-pressure turbo straight-five with 211 metric horsepower (155 kW; 208 hp) at 5,000 rpm; torque 320 newton metres (236 lb·ft) 1,500–4,500 rpm, and the 2.4 litre high-pressure turbo straight-five with 260 metric horsepower (191 kW; 256 hp) at 5,500 rpm; torque 350 newton metres (258 lb·ft) at 2,100–5,000 rpm. Both US market S60 engines are turbo fives, and are exclusively mated to a five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. No manual transmissions or diesel engines are available for the US market V70 or S60. For the 2011 model year, Volvo will no longer sell the V70 in North America.[8] In its place, a front-wheel drive version of the XC70 will be made available. [edit] Comfort The front seats and the rear bench are of orthopedic design to provide maximum comfort and support for all occupants. The V70 also features a high-end audio system. Dolby Pro-Logic systems and sub-woofers are also available as upgrades to the standard audio system. Options include DVD navigation with map data and remote control, a rear seat DVD entertainment system with two headrest monitors, headlamp washers, integrated child booster seats, an integrated home link remote control garage door opener, rear-door child-safety locks, rear park assist, power-adjustable passenger seats with 3-position memory and lumbar support, heated front seats, an integrated grocery bag holder, a rear view mirror compass, an integrated sunglass holder, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power glass moonroof, 12 volt power outlets, leather seats, rear tinted windows, and a rain sensor. Anti-submarining seats and overhead-mounted seat belt reminder lights come standard. Other standard features for 2007 include Volvo on call roadside assistance for four years, rear window deactivation, safe approach and home safe lighting. [edit] Safety As standard, the vehicle is equipped with driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags. Also featured is the WHIPS whiplash prevention system on the front seats. Third generation V70s are available with the BLIS blind-spot sensor system, that can detect vehicles otherwise hidden from view of the driver due to being just off to one side of the car. As is typical for Volvos, all models feature daytime running lights to improve driver visibility and safety throughout the day. If an XC70 owner desires to have their daytime running lights turned off, they may do so at any authorized Volvo dealership. The latest revision of the XC70 includes DSTC (standard on all models) - Dynamic Stability and Traction control, that combines the functions otherwise known as Electronic Stability Programme and traction control. Euro NCAP evaluated the V70 in 2007 awarding it 5 of 5 stars for adult occupant protection. The V70 scored 15 of 16 points in the front test and 16 of 16 in the side test. The car was penalised 1 point in the pole test for improper deployment of the curtain airbag in both the original test and the re-test. The car received one of two points available in the pole test. The V70 was granted an additional two points for seat belt reminders of three available in this catergory. The V70 received a total of 34 of 37 points and therefore five stars (33-37) in EuroNCAP's evaluation.[9] The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Volvo S80 (sedan varriant) their Top Safety Pick award. The S80 was granted the IIHS's highest rating of "good" in front, side, rear and roof strength tests and has Electronic Stability Control as standard equipment to receive the award.[10] [edit] V70 Plug-in Hybrid As part of a joint venture with Vattenfall, a Swedish energy company, Volvo converted two Volvo V70 to diesel-electric plug-in hybrid demonstrators that have been in field testing in Göteborg, Sweden since December 2009.[11] Vattenfall offered customers participating in this trial the supply of renewable electricity generated from wind power or hydropower.[12] Among other challenges, this test has allowed to experience the all-electric range at low temperatures, which has been a disadvantage of plug-in vehicles.[11][12] The V70 PHEV test car uses a 11.3 kWh lithium ion battery pack.[13] As reported by the test drivers, the V70 Plug-in Hybrid demonstrators have an all-electric range between 20 kilometres (12 mi) to 30 kilometres (19 mi) . The demonstrators were built with a button to allow test drivers to manually choose between electricity or diesel engine power at any time.[11][14] The first phase of the field trial ended in June 2010 and included 16 families, all employees of Volvo or Vattenfall, who had the car for 1.5 weeks to one month. A second phase of the test goes from July to December 2010 with Vattenfall employees in Göteborg and Stockholm. Among the key findings of the first phase are:[11][14] Most drivers chose to use electricity in city traffic at lower speeds, but switched to diesel for highway driving. Test drivers found that 20 to 30 km was not enough all-electric range, and called for at least 50 kilometres (31 mi), some want 80 kilometres (50 mi) and even up to 150 to 200 kilometres (93 to 120 mi). All of the test drivers charge on a daily basis but none ever used the public charging station installed for the trial. Before the test trials drivers were concerned about being a danger to pedestrians and cyclists due to the quietness of the electric-drive vehicle. After the test several of them change their opinion and said that this issue was less of a problem than expected. Volvo announced in 2009 and confirmed in 2010 the launching of series production diesel-electric plug-in hybrids as early as 2012. Volvo claimed that its plug-in hybrid could achieve 125 miles per US gallon (1.88 L/100 km; 150 mpg-imp), based on the European test cycle.[14][15] [edit] References ^ "Volvo V70 Marketing Positioning" (PDF). Available in sedan/saloon and station wagon/estate body styles, the Volvo 850 was notable as the first front-wheel drive vehicle from this Swedish manufacturer to be exported to North America. It is often considered the vehicle that gave Volvo its reputation as a high-end auto maker in North America due to the level of features available in this model that were not offered in previous models. At the time of its development, the 850 was regarded as one of the largest engineering endeavours in Sweden. It was sold as a saloon (sedan) with an estate (wagon) model on sale from 1992 in Europe. The 850 was the first Volvo model in North America to feature front-wheel drive and an all-aluminium alloy 20-valve straight-five engine. The 850 was Volvo's top-seller in the mid-1990s. In markets outside the U.S., a 10-valve variant of the five-cylinder was popular for its lower cost and better fuel economy. All U.S. 850s received standard equipment such as dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system, head restraints and three-point seat belts for all passengers, power windows, door locks, and mirrors, cruise control, and dual zone climate control. Side torso airbags became a world first when introduced as an option for 1995. Some other options during the model run included features such as traction control, leather interior, power glass sunroof, power seats, heated seats, remote keyless entry, automatic climate control, and automatic transmission. The 850 saloon features an interior space of 2.80 cubic metres (99 cu ft). This is slightly more than the 2.78 cubic metres (98 cu ft) of the 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, even though the car is reasonably compact on the outside. This space is achieved by mounting the in-line 5-cylinder engine transversely (from the left to the right of the car) under the hood. The road-holding and handling are vastly improved over the previous rear-wheel drive Volvos. The 850 Turbo estate is capable of top speeds in excess of 250 kilometres per hour (155 mph) when ungoverned. Production models of the estate and saloon are electronically governed to approximately 142 mph (229 km/h). In 1995, a limited-edition version, labeled T-5R, was sold worldwide. From 1996-1998, a high-end model, the R, was produced. It was based on the aforementioned T-5R. In 1996 a "Platinum" edition of the 850 Turbo was available. The exterior paint for these models came in a metallic pearl platinum-color and had special 16 inch alloy wheels. The interior was fitted with leather seats and burled walnut accents. Only 1,500 of these were imported for the U.S. market.[1] For the last model year (1996/1997), the 850 AWD (All Wheel Drive) model was introduced with a new 193 bhp (144 kW; 196 PS) low pressure turbo 2.4 litre engine (B5254T). In 1998, the model line was updated, and renamed the Volvo S70 (saloon) and Volvo V70 (estate). These vehicles were sold in the U.S. through the 2000 model year when there were still many 850's waiting to be sold. This allowed for an alternatively designed vehicle; the 2001 Volvo S60 and Volvo V70, during the 850's production hiatus. [edit] Rear suspension For the 850, Volvo created what it called "Delta-link semi-independent rear suspension". Volvo held a U.S. patent for rear axle bushings that compress under load, giving the Volvo 850 passive rear steering. The automobile also has a tight turning circle, 10.2 m (33.5 ft), and is considered very maneuverable. By comparison, later large Volvos had a 11.9 m (39.0 ft) turning circle. [edit] Motorsport Legendary Australian race driver Peter Brock drove a Volvo 850 touring car in a one-off Bathurst 12-hour endurance event in 1994, and drove the car in the 1996 Australian Super Touring Championship. Volvo joined forces with the famous and very successful Tom Walkinshaw Racing team (TWR) in 1994 to build an 850 Estate touring car to compete in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). Despite much criticism, the 850 Estate performed well, with a best placed finish of fifth, and a best qualifying spot of third. It was driven by Rickard Rydell and Jan Lammers and Volvo finished sixth in manufacturers' standings in the 1994 season. In 1995, TWR and Volvo built the 850 Saloon BTCC Racer and this won five races, qualified on pole position 13 times with Rickard Rydell and Tim Harvey and finished third in the championship. The switch was due mainly to the change in BTCC regulations which allowed aerodynamic aids (spoilers) which effectively ended any chance of the Estate being fully competitive. In 1996, an improved 850 saloon raced which boasted eight wins with Rickard Rydell and Kelvin Burt and finished third in the championship. Volvo were also prevalent with the 850 in championships across Europe and in Australia. [edit] T-5R In 1995, an exclusive limited edition race-bred model developed in part with Porsche named the T-5R was released. The vehicle was based upon the 850 Turbo with the B5234T5 engine with a special ECU known as the Bosch #628 ECU, that added 1.3 psi (0.1 bar)*** to turbocharger boost pressure, giving the engine an additional 18 horsepower (13 kW). The T-5R was capable of accelerating to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.7 seconds and completing a quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds. Top speed was electronically limited to 155 mph (249 km/h). Despite the boxy, understated appearance, the stock T-5R had a drag coefficient of 0.29. The vehicle came standard with Pirelli P-Zero tyres. The tyres provided a grip of 0.88 g. It was also one of the first commercial automobiles to utilize Alcantara suede in the interior (i.e. front seat inserts, rear seat inserts, armrests, console), an idea taken from the Porsche 911 Turbo at the time.[citation needed] The engine was co-developed with Porsche, as was the transmission and remaining powertrain components. Porsche also aided in designing some of the interior as well (i.e. Alcantara suede inserts). The automobile was noted[by whom?] for its lavish, yet ergonomic interior. All options found on competitors came standard in the Volvo.[citation needed] Only two options were available - the trunk-mounted Alpine 6-CD changer and the no-cost 16" wheels for a smoother, more comfortable ride and driveability in snow because of the all-weather tyres. The engine produced 240 hp (179 kW) and 221 lb·ft (300 N·m) of torque. The tranmission was a 4-speed automatic. (Volvo's 5-speed automatic transmission debuted 2 years later.) A 5-speed manual transmission was also offered in certain markets, such as Canada and, of course, Sweden. 5500 T-5Rs were produced worldwide, of which 2000 went to the US: The 1995 850 T-5R was limited in exterior paint color choices: cream yellow - 2119 worldwide including sedan and station wagon black - 2234 worldwide including sedan and station wagon olive green - 2477 worldwide including sedan and station wagon The rarest of all versions was a yellow sportwagon. It is believed that 185 came to the US, as more sedans were made than sportwagons. Maybe as few as 35 of the yellow sportwagons were sent to the US. At the time, the Volvo T-5R wagon was the fastest wagon ever made and held the title until Mercedes created an AMG E-Class wagon several years later.[citation needed] The T-5R sold out in short time, leading Volvo to repeat the T-5R the following year as the 850 R. However, presumably because of manufacturing reasons, the vehicle was notably slower and laborious through turns. The 850 T-5R was the quickest automatic transmission automobile at the time,[citation needed] until the 1997 Corvette automatic later topped the Volvo's 0-60 mph time. It was the quickest sedan available in terms of 0-60 mph and 1/4-mile times and top speed until the German automakers began the famous horsepower wars that continue to this day.[citation needed] The Volvo 850 T-5R was also noted for its safety features. It was the first automobile to have four airbags standard.[citation needed] The side airbags were installed in the seat cushions. German automakers would soon follow with their own side airbags as well, however, they were installed in the doors. The side airbags followed into all Volvos the following year as an option and became standard on the full-line a year after that, before other manufacturers began offering them as an option, in particular American and Japanese automakers. The same occurred with Volvo's introduction of daytime-running headlamps. The automobile also came with the first integrated child booster seat in the rear cabin.[citation needed] It was also the first sedan to have three-point seatbelts at all five seating positions. Volvo would later debut the side curtain airbag a couple of years later in the S80 and make those standard on the full line of autos before other manufacturers as well, though Lexus followed only months later. Also included in the 1995 T-5R package is a front bumper with a lip, rear spoiler, side skirts, polished aluminum door sills, special graphite leather like that of the Porsche 911 and Alcantara (the fire-retardant version of Toray Industries' Ultrasuede (tm)) seats in dark grey like that of the Porsche 911 Turbo and a black interior with deep walnut wood grain accents. Both yellow and black versions came with the same black interior as the only choice. The T-5R had an additional badge to the left of the "850" on the trunk, referred to as "The Motorsport badge". Aftermarket Motorsport badges are available and are often added by owners but only the 1995 T-5R came standard with that badge. The standard wheels were the titanium-gray 5-spoke 17×7 "Titan". 1995 was the only year that the a model was badged as a "T-5R". All subsequent models are badged with just the simple addition of "R" due to the one-off intended uniqueness of the T-5R. (e.g. 1995 850 T-5R, 1996 850 R, 2004 S60 R) See Volvo press release: https://www.customers.volvocars.com/owners/docs/1995/1995_releases/1995_release_6.html [edit] R models Volvo 850 R Wagon The 1996 and 1997 Volvo 850R also came as a Sport Wagon. In 5-door form, the turbocharged wagon can go 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds and reach up to 153 mph (246 km/h).[citation needed] The 1996 and 1997 (the final year of the 850) R models were not as limited in production as the T-5R was. Some sources[who?] stated about 9,000 R produced. Flame red, black, anthracite grey, olive green metallic, turquoise and white were the only color choices. In the US market only Red, White and Black were available. Also, a new rear spoiler was introduced on sedans. The interior was now two-tone and designed to be more luxurious and appealing to Volvo's typical market,[clarification needed] but the layout changed — in 1995 the leather was in the center of the seats — later models had it on the outside bolster portion with the suede in the middle. The standard wheels used in these model years were the 17×7 "Volans". For 1996, Volvo introduced a new manual transmission outside the US market, called the M59, that came standard with a Torsen differential. Furthermore, the M59 cars were equipped with a slightly larger turbocharger, the TD04H-16T, and upgraded software enabling these cars to produce 250 hp (190 kW) versus 240 hp (180 kW) for the automatic transmission equipped cars. Torque was also significantly increased in the manual models from 300 N·m (220 lb·ft) to 350 N·m (260 lb·ft)..[citation needed] For the Italian market, the R was based on the 2.0 litre 850 Turbo. The transmission was the standard AW/50-42 used in all U.S. 850's, the M56H being available in other countries. The T-5R was the new high performance model, with more power stemming from ECU tuning, and special suspension, trim and wheels. In addition to the introduction of the T-5R, changes included new tail-lights for sedans, optional side airbags for all variants, new interior switch-gear design and several other detail changes. The T-5R high performance version became the R in 1996, but the performance differences remained relatively the same. The United Kingdom received 2.5 10v and 2.5 20v versions, which were unavailable in the U.S. and Canada, but made their way to Russia and Switzerland. 1997 Volvo 850 in Sweden [edit] 1997 850 ($26,710 MSRP): 2.4 L I5, 168 hp (125 kW) @ 6300 rpm and 162 ft·lbf (220 N·m) @ 4500 rpm 850 GLT ($31,835 MSRP): 2.4 L I5, 190 hp (142 kW) @ 5100 rpm and 199 ft·lbf (270 N·m) at 1600 rpm 850 T-5 ($34,500 MSRP): 2.3 L I5, 222 hp (166 kW) @ 5200 rpm and 221 ft·lbf (300 N·m) @ 2100 rpm 850 R ($38,685 MSRP): 2.3 L I5, 240 hp (179 kW) @ 5600 rpm and 221 ft·lbf (300 N·m) @ 2100 rpm For 1997, the 850's final year, all GLT models were increased to 190 hp (142 kW) by pairing a low-pressure turbocharger with the 2.4 L engine. The 850 Turbo model was thence called the 850 T-5, as it always had been in the UK. The 1997 model year was short, as the substantially similar (virtually identical except for superficial styling changes) Volvo S70 sedan and Volvo V70 wagon were introduced during the first half of 1997 shortly before Ford Motor Co. took over Volvo in 1998.
