UNLEADED FUEL IN VOLVO CARS Unleaded Fuel and LRP in your Volvo The pages linked above contain technical data and help for the service and maintenance of various Volvo cars. Most are Volvo documents. Remember to take all necessary safety precautions when working on your car. Four star leaded fuel is now almost totally gone from all the petrol station forecourts, and has been replaced by LRP - lead replacement fuel. The lead in the petrol has been replaced with potassium. Some cars can be converted to run on unleaded petrol; some can run on super unleaded petrol instead of leaded four star, and some cannot be converted at all. Volvo have produced a chart, seen below, that suggests methods of overcoming the problem of conversion. But even some Volvo technicians say that the fitting of a double head gasket is not adviseable. But what other means is available that will make conversion a financial viability. It is no use paying a high price for the conversion if your annual mileage is low. There are many differing opinions on converting, or the need to convert an engine to run on unleaded fuel. They all come from professional sources, and this suggests there is no tried and tested answer. Some sources say that retarding the ignition timing a few degrees will suffice. Other sources say that hardened valve seats need to be fitted to the cylinder head, others say not. While others will say there is no need to do anything unless you use the car regularly on long journeys at speeds of 60/70 mph. One of the problems that ocurrs with unleaded fuel is the valve seats over heat and start to burn. All Volvo engines built after the B16, B18 B20, B30 range will have hardened valve seat inserts so these engines will not suffer valve seat erosion, (B21, B23, B200, B230, B27, B28, B280E). But some of these engines have a high compression ratio and need a high octane fuel, and the only way to get them to run on 95 octane unleaded petrol is to fit 2 head gaskets. As mentioned above, this is not a very good idea. Volvo recommends that its customers use unleaded petrol where at all possible and avoid using unleaded petrol which include replacement additives. Do not use LRP petrol in a turbo engine. LRP Regarding LRP and additives, this is an extract from a paper by the Retail Motor Industry Federation: The evidence accumulated by the RMI from Sweden shows that engine damage has increased in that country in some vehicles since the introduction of LRP Valve burn has increased some 500% since the introduction of LRP, for both hard valve seat engines and soft valve seat engines. Corrosion of exhaust valve seats with LRP has ocurred to an extent that prompted the Chairman of the Swedish Engine Overhaulers Association to develop with SKF a high chromium insert which is more corrosion resistant. Turbocharger hot corrosion started to ocurr following the launch of LRP The turbocharger damage reducing in severity and frequency when sodium anti-wear additive was removed from the market. Turbine wheel hot corrosion continues to ocurr with potassium as the only anti-wear additive now marketed albeit to a lesser extent, but failures under warranty continue to occur nearly three years after the withdrawal of sodium. It is also worth looking at the web site for the Broquet Fuel Catalyst at www.broquet.co.uk Although it is several years since unleaded fuel was introduced in the UK, many owners of the 120, 1800, 140, 200, 300, 400 and 700 Series Volvo cars still enquire about converting their cars to use unleaded fuel. The following article is based on information from Volvo Car UK, and explains what they consider is necessary. There is also an interesting web site on 'fuel saving' devices at www.fuelsaving.info The following is reproduced by courtesy of Volvo Car UK. The car is a liberating influence on our way of life but it also imposes responsibilities upon drivers and manufacturers. A more respectful attitude towards our environment is now widely regarded as essential. Volvo are conscious of the responsibility we have to both our customers and the environment. We are therefore pleased to announce a new initiative that will assist both. 95 octane* unleaded petrol was introduced into the UK market during 1986 and many drivers are alive to the environmental advantage of using this petrol. The Volvo range has for some years included models that perform efficiently using unleaded petrol with over 50% of the current ½ million Volvos in the UK requiring no adjustment to do so. Your engine's ability to run on 95 octane* unleaded petrol will be dictated by model type, engine variant and model year. It is important to accurately identify the suitability of your engine before attempting to use this fuel. The table should assist you in its identification. However, if you are unsure of the exact details of your model, please contact your local Volvo dealer, who will be pleased to advise you. In March 1989 a high (98) octane unleaded petrol was introduced by a major fuel company. Known as "Super Green," this new fuel effectively means that 100% of Volvo petrol engined cars produced since 1981 model year can use this grade of unleaded petrol without the need of modification. The date of purchase or registration suffix letter should be ignored. e.g. A Volvo of model year '85 would have been available from October 1984 to September 1985. Please consult your local dealer if you are unsure of your model year. SUITABILITY CODE MEANING R Refer to Volvo dealer before using 95 octane unleaded petrol. In its original form this engine cannot run on 95 octane unleaded petrol. However, adjustments or modifications can be made to enable it to do so. Please consult your local Volvo dealer for further advice. Failure to heed the above may result in serious engine damage. U Must only use unleaded petrol. This Volvo is fitted with exhaust emission control equipment (i.e. catalytic converter and/or oxygen sensor) which is vulnerable to lead: the use of unleaded petrol is therefore essential to maintain proper operation. L Must only use leaded petrol. This Volvo was designed to run on leaded petrol only, and the use of either 95 or 98 octane unleaded petrol will damage the engine. At present there is no modification available to convert these cars E Can use EITHER unleaded or leaded petrol. This Volvo will run satisfactorily on UK 95 octane unleaded or leaded petrol, without modification or adjustments S Can use EITHER 98 octane unleaded or 4 Star leaded petrol. This Volvo will run satisfactorily on UK 98 octane "Super Green" unleaded or 4 Star leaded petrol only. Under no circumstances should 95 octane unleaded petrol be used until your engine is modified (if applicable). 1. Can use unleaded fuel after fitting two head gaskets to reduce the compression ratio, and installing deeper water pump seal. 2. Can use unleaded fuel but will cause carburettor metering needle wear. Renew needle every 30,000 miles. 3. Can use unleaded fuel after fitting modified metering needle, part number 3501202-0 240 saloon and estate, DL/GL, with B21A 107 HP engine, 1980-83, set ignition timing to 7 degrees BTDC Q What is the difference between 95 octane unleaded and 98 octane unleaded petrol A 95 octane unleaded is the standard grade of unleaded petrol introduced in 1986. By the end of the year, 1300 sites will be selling this grade. 98 octane unleaded was introduced in March 1989. It provides the same performance as 4 star leaded petrol currently available but has the considerable advantage of not containing lead. It is sometimes known as "Super Green" and approximately 500 sites will be selling this new grade by the end of the year. It is a few pence more expensive than 95 octane unleaded. Q Can leaded and unleaded petrol be mixed A Yes, in engines that have been designed to use either, or have been adapted/modified, unleaded and leaded petrol can be mixed with no detrimental effects. However, the petrol used must meet the octane requirement of your engine. Q Will the use of 95 octane unleaded petrol affect engine performance and fuel consumption A This very much depends on the particular engine variant. However, as a rule of thumb, those engines originally designed to accommodate both unleaded or leaded 95 octane petrol, no difference in performance will be noticed. If the engine has been modified or incorporates a device to automatically compensate for the use of 95 octane unleaded petrol a reduction in engine power and increase in fuel consumption may occur. If this is of concern to you, it may be worthwhile considering using 98 octane unleaded, which will not affect your Volvo's current performance. Q If my engine requires adjustment or modification to run on 95 octane unleaded petrol, what does this entail A The level of modification depends on model type, year and engine, but ranges from a simple adjustment to the ignition timing, to the relatively major operation of lowering the compression ratio. Your Volvo dealer can provide more information regarding your Volvo. Q What happens if I use 95 octane unleaded petrol in an engine for which it is not suitable A A condition commonly known as "pinking" can occur when the engine is under load. If severe and left unresolved, it could lead to engine damage (e.g. to the pistons). Additionally, on older models (prior to those listed in this brochure) damage may be caused to the engine valves and some carburettor parts. Q What can I do if I incorrectly fill my car with 95 octane unleaded fuel A If you realise your mistake early enough and only put up to two gallons of unleaded petrol in your tank, you must fill the remainder of the tank with 4 star leaded petrol. If you drive carefully and avoid high engine revs, road speed and engine load, no damage should occur. If, however, "pinking" occurs, consult with your Volvo dealer as soon as possible, as it may be necessary to drain the fuel from your tank. If you put more than two gallons in your tank please consult your nearest Volvo dealer before continuing your journey.Q Is unleaded petrol available in other countries A 95 octane unleaded petrol is available in all European countries. 98 octane unleaded petrol is available in some European countries. In a few countries a 92 octane unleaded petrol is also available. This should not be used in UK specification Volvo cars. These so-called 'bi-fuel' cars use LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas, a mixture of propane and butane) which currently costs just under 40p a litre, and they are significantly more environmentally friendly than petrol or diesel vehicles. They can also run on normal unleaded petrol, however - both for starting up, and as a back-up if you can't find an LPG refuelling station. LPG/petrol versions are now available of the S40 and V40 1.8, V70 2.4 and S80 2.4, with an LPG/petrol S60 2.4 to follow later this year. Volvo is also offering CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) cars, but these are not covered here as the infrastructure is not yet there to support the private motorist. LPG/petrol cars are a viable proposition, however, and one of the key selling points of these particular models is that the LPG system is fitted in the Volvo factory itself, rather than as an aftermarket conversion. Read on for more about these cars, and more about the pros and cons of LPG use.Reliability and QualityAll the usual Volvo benefits of solid build and good finish; these bi-fuel models have modified camshafts, multi-point gas injection and a re-mapped on-board diagnostics and engine-management system with the ability to adapt to different grades/qualities of gas. This means they are specially designed to run on gas, and should avoid any tuning, timing or power-loss problems associated with aftermarket conversions. The suspension has also been modified to allow for the extra fuel tanks, and the cars are backed by the full Volvo three-year/60,000-mile warranty. ImageA great image-booster if you care about the environment - although the only exterior difference between these models and their petrol equivalents is a discreet 'bi-fuel' badge. Otherwise, as smart and respectable as any other Volvo. PerformanceThe bi-fuel models have slightly less torque (pulling power) than the standard petrol cars, although in reality this adds only 0.1 sec to the 0-62 mph time. More to the point, the bi-fuel conversion is available only on non-turbo, relatively low-powered cars that aren't particularly high performers anyway. Volvo says there aren't any problems with converting turbo engines to LPG, and that more powerful bi-fuel models could be offered at a later date if there is sufficient demand. Ease of DrivingYou won't notice any real difference in the driving experience itself - see the standard road tests for the S40/V40, V70 and S80. An extra switch on the dashboard allows you to swap between LPG and petrol (this is usually done automatically: the car starts up on petrol, changes to LPG at operating temperature, and then back to petrol if you run out of LPG. You won't notice the change). However, you should be aware that not many petrol stations stock LPG, although there should be around 1000 stockists in the UK by the end of the year. Check the 4car LPG Directory to find out if you can buy LPG in your area. Take note also that Eurotunnel continues to ban gas cars - a hangover from the bad old days of dodgy explosive aftermarket conversions. This will be reviewed when a common European standard for gas conversions is agreed, but don't expect an immediate result. If you get to the Continent (by ferry), you will need to stock up on nozzle adaptors as there are different refuelling systems in different countries; some countries have more refuelling points than others, although LPG is easily available in France. Should you run out, then switch to petrol, but remember that the petrol tank is a lot smaller than in a normal petrol car.Safety and SecurityAll the usual Volvo attributes (see standard road tests). You may be concerned about the safety of driving around with large tanks full of explosive gas, but these days, the tanks are so well reinforced that your petrol tank is more likely to blow up in an accident or under high pressure. The fuel system is completely closed to avoid spillage or leakage, and Volvo has tested the gas tanks and system very thoroughly indeed. RoominessThe main drawback with most bi-fuel cars is that the extra tanks take up boot space. Volvo has bypassed this problem in the S60, V70 and S80 by putting the LPG tanks under the floor, but there is a slight loss of space in the S40 and V40. Of more concern, perhaps, will be the loss of a spare wheel - although many new cars don't have one these days (and when was the last time you actually changed a wheel yourself?) Volvo suggests that 'get you home' spray, a puncture seal and an air compressor is enoughRunning costsThe cynical would suggest that an economical diesel model is just as cost-effective, but besides the fuel savings (tax has been frozen on LPG now until 2004, making the current average price of a litre less than 40p) there are other tax incentives, including company car tax and vehicle excise duty. A bi-fuel car may cost £1800-£2200 more than its petrol equivalent, but 75 per cent of that difference is refundable through the Government's Powershift grant scheme (www.transportaction.org ) on S60, V70 and S80 models (60 per cent on the S40 and V40). It's also very likely that bi-fuel cars will be exempted from London congestion charging or other similar schemes; incentives like this, including free parking and exemption from city centre car bans, already exist elsewhere in Europe. ComfortBi-fuel cars are no noisier than their petrol equivalentsFun to DriveBear in mind that the variants converted to LPG are those with adequate, rather than thrilling, performance. Stereo/Sat NavThe stereo system is the same as for S or SE versions of the standard models; satellite navigation is an option on some models. Some of the bass speaker upgrades in estate models are not available, due to the positioning of the extra fuel tanks. Value for MoneyBuying a Volvo is never a cheap option, but you do get a quality car that will be cost-effective to run. It should also hold its value well. Although, traditionally, bi-fuel cars have been difficult to sell on, the latest evidence is that this situation is reversing as demand for LPG cars increases. UsedAlthough mainstream LPG use is still some way off, demand for used factory-fit bi-fuel cars is getting strong, so don't expect any second-hand bargains. The balance of the full three-year, 60,000-mile warranty will be a bonus. Home | Legal | Contact Us | Members | Join VOC | Search | Site Map Volvo Owners Club Limited® 1962-2010 || Volvo Bi-Fuel - saving fuel costs and the environment Volvo has released the following details: Bi-Fuel models: S40/V40 - 1.8 petrol/LPG S60, V70 and S80 - 2.4 petrol
and LPG or CNG Cheaper fuel: LPG approx 40p/litre, CNG approx 48p/litre Bi-Fuel: Engines run on petrol and gas Safe: factory fitted, fully warranted, safe to use Environment: lower CO2 emissions than petrol or diesel Health: cleaner toxic emissions than petrol or diesel Smooth: smooth changeover from Petrol to LPG/CNG Practical: underfloor tanks leave load space clear Performance: no discernible loss of power when running on gas TRUST VOLVO You can always trust Volvo to be thinking of environmental issues and over
the years it has pioneered the introduction of catalytic converters,
alternative fuels, and low-emission engines. Volvo's latest development is the timely launch of a full range of Bi-Fuel
models powered by petrol and cheaper gas (Liquid Petroleum Gas or Compressed
Natural Gas) offering valuable savings on running costs and lower, cleaner
emissions. CHEAPER FUEL PRICES With LPG fuel available for approximately 40p/litre - approximately half
the cost of unleaded petrol - and CNG for less than 50p/litre, Volvo's Bi-Fuel
models offer significant reductions in running costs for private motorists and
fleet users alike. Companies can make even bigger savings if they install
their own gas pumps, which can reduce the cost of LPG to as little as
20p/litre. Dual gas and petrol tanks also usefully extend the range of the car
between refuelling. For instance, a V70 LPG would easily have a range of over
500 miles. Example of fuel savings for a Volvo S40 1.8/LPG with an annual mileage of
15,000 miles: Fuel Type Typical price Typical Annual Saving over per litre MPG Fuel bill petrol Petrol 82p 35 £1,597 - Diesel 84p 52 £1,101 £496 LPG 40p 31 £880 £717 CNG 48p 35 £935 £662 Although the fuel consumption is slightly higher when running on LPG, the
cheaper fuel still offers important savings on fuel costs against petrol or
diesel, especially when multiplied across the cost of running a large fleet. With the increasing focus on UK fuel costs and alternative fuels, it is no
surprise that the number of filling stations with LPG pumps is rapidly
increasing and now estimated to be over 500 in the UK and is expanding at an
average of around one per week. LOWER AND CLEANER EMISSIONS The impending changes to company car tax has firmly put emissions under
the spotlight. The good news is that Volvo's engine range already has
commendably low CO2 emissions, but the even better news is that emissions are
not only substantially lower for Bi-Fuel models when running on gas, but they
are also cleaner and carry less toxins. CO2 emissions are around 10 per cent lower when running on LPG, while CNG
is even cleaner with a 20 per cent reduction over petrol. Apart from the obvious benefits to the environment, there is also an
important health issue as toxic emissions are being linked to the increase
in cases of asthma and other respiratory ailments. Coupled with Volvo's
unique PremAir "ozone eating" radiator the Bi-Fuels offer a serious clean
alternative. PRACTICAL, INTEGRATED DESIGN Volvo was the first to produce a fully manufacturer warranted alternative
fuelled car, and now has a full range, all produced on the same production
lines as standard models. Unlike some other marques, Volvo's gas tank is
located under the rear floor to keep the loadspace clear. Loadspace is
completely unaffected in the S60, V70 and S80 and remains the same as standard
models - even in estate cars. The engine smoothly changes from running on petrol to gas, or gas to
petrol, at the flick of a switch on the dashboard with no discernible loss of
power. The only other sign of the advanced dual fuel system is twin fuel
gauges and a Bi-Fuel badge on the rear. The gas filling point is discreetly
located behind the regular filler flap. Volvo's Bi-Fuel models will be available with a 116bhp 1.8 petrol/LPG
engine in the S40/V40 early in 2001, then with a 140bhp 2.4 petrol/LPG or CNG
engine in the S80 and V70 in the spring and S60 in the late autumn. Naturally, all Bi-Fuel models have been thoroughly crash-tested to meet
Volvo's stringent safety standards and come with the assurance of the standard
Volvo UK three-year (or 60,000 mile) warranty. PRICES The Government is supporting alternative fuels by offering grants of up to
75 per cent of the additional cost of the Bi-Fuel option via the Powershift
programme from the Energy Savings Trust. The Bi-Fuel models will be available in S and SE trim. Prices for the
V70, S60 and S80 Bi-Fuel models will be announced early next year at an
expected premium over the equivalent petrol model of approximately £2000 for
LPG or CNG. Prices for S40/V40 Bi-Fuel models are listed below and carry a £1800
premium over the equivalent standard model.
