BOSCH FUEL INJECTION Bosch K-Jetronic Fuel Injection Since their introduction, the Jetronic fuel injection systems have proved themselves millions of times over under the harsh conditions of everyday driving. This success is a result of the advantages which fuel injection can offer when considering today's demands for economy, performance, and cleaner exhausts. The K-Jetronic is a mechanical system in which the fuel is continuously metered in accordance with the amount of air drawn in by the engine. Using the Lambda sensor together with additional equipment for the Lambda closed-loop control facility, the K-Jetronic can already comply today with the exhaust-gas regulations of tomorrow. The construction and principle of operation of the K-Jetronic is dealt with in this Technical Instruction manual. It must be stressed that the implementation of this system by Volvo on many of its cars, involves some modifications, according to car model, engine, year and country of issue. Summer 1998 ’Superior Safety’ scoops another accolade for Volvo’s S40 Volvo has underlined the class-leading safety position of its S40 models by winning yet another prestigious award. Now added to the roll of honour already achieved by the S40 is a coveted 1998 What Car? Safety Award. Says Editor, Mark Payton: "This award recognises a maker who brings exceptional dedication and expertise to the business of keeping you alive. The S40 is tangible proof of Volvo's superiority." This latest trophy complements safety awards won worldwide by the Volvo S40/V40 range including the Prince Michael Award for Road Safety. Features that have helped the car set new standards include Volvo's unique SIPS side impact protection system, side airbags, anti-lock brakes and seat belt pre-tensioner; on all models. The car also scored the only maximum four star rating in the recent Euro NCAP crash test programme and was awarded the highest safety score by the Consumer's Association in their recent Which? survey. But Safety chiefs at Volvo are not resting on their laurels. Says Stefan Nilsson at the Safety Centre: "We are already developing even more safety innovations for our new products, including an inflatable curtain to protect against head injuries in side impacts and a new seat aimed at achieving a significant reduction in whiplash injuries in low speed, rear-end collisions." The Volvo S40 1.8i and V40 1.8i - the first European cars with direct injection The Volvo S40 1.8i and V40 1.8i are the first European car models with direct injection petrol engines. Direct injection, which combines the benefits of low fuel consumption and high power output, can be seen as the first step towards the 25 per cent reduction in total fuel consumption that Volvo has undertaken to achieve by the year 2005. Volvo petrol direct injection is based on the technique of injecting the fuel directly into the combustion chamber straight into each cylinder - instead of injecting the mixture via an inlet duct. The result is more efficient combustion and thus lower fuel consumption. The technology demands certain conditions in order to work in an optimum way. With the Volvo S40 1.8i and V40 1.81, the smooth and economical driver can expect a substantial improvement in fuel consumption: - up to 10 per cent on country roads - 10-15 per cent in city/urban traffic The direct -injection Volvo is a four-cylinder 1.8-litre engine that was originally developed by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and has been modified by Volvo for the S40/V40 models. The power output is 125 bhp and peak torque is 174 Nm. Deliveries of the engine will begin in March and the first cars are expected to be on the market in the spring of 1998. Volvo’s new V70 Torslanda Volvo, the manufacturer of the UK’s best selling large estate cars - has added two new models, priced at under £20,000, to its versatile and popular V70 range. The new V70 Torslanda arrived in the UK with two engines - a 126 bhp 2.0 litre and a 144 bhp 2.5 litre - and is available in six colours. The highly specified interior boasts power steering, electric windows, RDS radio cassette with 6 speakers and electrically adjustable door mirrors. The V70's seats are supportive and ergonomically designed and feature the new exclusive Andorra upholstery. The Torslanda can also be tailored to individual requirements from a wide range of Volvo accessories. The V70 Torslanda features class leading safety including SIPS (side impact protection system), SIPS airbags, driver's airbag, front seat belt pre-tensioners, five three-point seat belts, five head restraints, ABS and a high level LED brake light for increased visibility. Volvo’s V70 has been voted "Estate Car of The Year" for three years in succession by the top selling motoring magazine Auto Express. Judged by the magazine on the following criteria, accommodation, driveability, economy, refinement, safety and value for money, the Volvo V70 won against stiff competition including the BMW 5-series Touring and the Peugeot 406. Thanks! 1972 1800 Es Fuel Injection Options bolnobolus View Member Profile Jul 2 2008, 04:19 PM Post #1 Newbie Group: Members Posts: 1 Joined: 2-July 08 Member No.: 45,008 Status: Location: Canada Drives: 1800 es I've got a 72 ES with fuel problems. My mechanic thinks it might be a corroded pick up line in the tank but we recently replaced the fuel sending unit and the tank is nearly spotless, including the brass filter at the bottom so I don't think that's the cause. The car runs perfectly on a full tank until I use about 15-20 litres (4-5 gallons) of gas, then it runs like air is getting in the system or as though only pulses of fuel are getting to the injectors. The more I try to run it with less than 2/3 of a tank, the worse it runs. This happens with every tank of gas for the last year. The only exception to this rule occurs when I have a full tank of gas but the engine is very hot. For example, I recently drove about 100 km (60 miles) out of town and filled up before I left. The car ran perfectly for the first 45 minutes then started hesitating intermittently. It's like the fuel supply goes off for a second, on for a second, but surprisingly the car almost never stalls. In this case, I pulled over and let the car cool down for 10 minutes and it ran perfectly the rest of the way. To summarize - the car runs like crap with less than 2/3 of a tank or when it is very hot. Any suggestions? checksix View Member Profile Nov 14 2008, 12:02 AM Post #2 Newbie Group: Members Posts: 10 Joined: 19-October 08 Member No.: 49,497 Status: Location: USA Drives: 01 V70 T5A Sorry to notice that no one had any ideas for you. I had a 73 1800ES until crashed with almost 400K miles and know most of the vehicle, but I have to admit, what you describe is not making a lot of sense. Since the pump sucks, any break in the line from pick-up to pump can allow air entry. With the symptoms only below 3/4 tank, when the level gets that low it has to be uncovering a line, and it would be at that point the leak is. I realize you mentioned the tank really looked good, but is it possible it's not corrosion that caused the hole, but a natural defect in the tubing that finally failed? One place I never had to go with mine was the gas tank, so I'm clueless what it looks like inside, so my suggestion may be far off base. In looking how my manual drew the schematic for the fuel tank, it would only have this happen at about 1/3 tank left, but these type drawings are pretty unreliable. Any chance it might have something to do with the fuel pump? I read it has an internal bypass built in so that it won’t over pressurize the system with a regulator failure. I wonder if the bypass is opening early, and not allowing proper pressurization, and that is somehow related to how hard the pump works with tank level.Have you tried running with a pressure gage plugged into the system to see what it is doing while it starts to fail? I didn't quite understand your explanation of how it is failing when hot, I would think at about that point in time the fuel tank would be nearing the levels where it failed, but perhaps a bit more full. With it cooling down and running well later sure sounds electrical where a connection get hot enough to open and cools till it closes again. Relay? Any chance of wiring a pilot light to the pump connections to display on the dash area? This would put to rest the power is intermittent for whatever reason. Of course the electrical issue could be internal to the pump too. Anyhow, by doing both tests, I would think it would clear most of the rest of the system except for the pump and tank, but ya have to start somewhere! Of course the best news would be you found the problem and never updated the forum! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif) Good Luck, not sure you'll get this message since it was so old, but I figured I'd give it a shot.Jerry01 V70 T5a ncrowe View Member Profile Mar 5 2009, 08:46 PM Post #3 Newbie Group: Members Posts: 3 Joined: 5-March 09 Member No.: 53,574 Status: Location: USA Drives: 2005 Volvo 850, 1972 Volvo1800es One thing about this j-tronics injection is the throttle controller gets corroded. Pop the back off the black thing that the throttle cable actuates ( it may have screws), and take a pencil eraser and clean up those contacts. It may be the throttle position rather than the amount of fuel in your tank or engine temp that is making it run like *&%$. Mine jerked and hesitated so badly that I broke a u-joint until I cleaned it up, which then made it run like a (shudder) toyota! « Next Oldest P1800, 1800 & 1800ES Forum Next Newest » Advanced Search 1 User(s) are reading this topic (1 Guests and 0 Anonymous Users) 0 Members: Get your Volvo listed in the Garage Today, for FREE, to share with the world what you drive and what toys and modifications you have.
