OK its got Volvo badges on it but the engine & gearbox on my version are Mitsubishi. Of course I took out the T4 & LPT but settled (for tax reasons & economy) on the 1.8iSE. Full leather, climate, winter pack (heated seats & headlamp wipers)groovy alloys...Theoretically a nice car but unfortunately has some annoying problems i wudnt expect from a £19,000 otr car. The main problem is it scrunches when changing between 2nd & 3rd gear. It went on scrunching everytime i went up from 2nd to 3rd so i mentioned this to my dealer who said it was cos it was new. Ok, so left it for 10,000 miles, still had the same problem, so they changed the gearbox (so say). It still had the same fault, then a guy @ the garage gave me a memo between mitsubishi & volvo saying there was a fault on some of these gearboxes but didnt have a clue how to fix it!! Over 40,000 miles later, it still scrunches between 2nd & 3rd. Thats my worst gripe...now for the rest...it needed new rear brake pads @ 20,000 miles, it gets thru bulbs like their going out of fashion (look for 4 tail lights on v40's, normally got at least 1 blown)& the trim rattles & creaks like my old ford escort. My 1.8i with the direct injection mitsubishi engine is very economical (average 44mpg but can get nearly 50 if i go careful) but although having tons of torque & 125bhp it isnt very quick off the mark. It is ok on motorways but the wind & road noise gets quite loud at 70mph. I will be replacing it in 2004 but more than likely wont be Volvo...more likely Laguna, Passat or the new Vectra. At 50,000 miles & just less than 2 years old, the engine started running rough as...u knows, & the tickover was all over the place. Mentioned it to the dealer & they said it needed a decoke!!! They said it was common for GDI's @ that sort of mileage. Agasp, it was done under warranty, but surely a modern engine doing mostly motorway driving using mostly BP regular unleaded shud be squeaky clean inside??At 60000 miles it had new discs fitted on the back & new pads all round. It's just had the original rear tyres replacing & they changed the fronts as well but I think they would have done another 15000! The car has gone back to the leasing company now....good riddence!! I had choice to replace it with a V50 but the quality of the V40 & appalling dealers left me no choice but to look elsewhere. I got a Peugeot 407SW instead! It might look more stylish, but the S/V40 is the same as the Japanese firm's Carisma underneath, and shares parts such as the gearboxes and GDI petrol engines. That means the smallest Volvo is well engineered and economical, but compared to rivals it feels cramped and lacks sparkle. Put together alongside the Mitsubishi in Holland, the car has also raised build quality issues, as it lacks the integrity of Swedish-built Volvos. But on the whole, they're reliable, stylish cars and represent sound used value, making them a refreshing alternative to the more mainstream saloons and estates. S40/V40 Checklist * Balljoints wear out above 40,000 miles, so check for knocking when the steering is on full lock, and inspect for wear around radius arms. * Uneven brake pad wear occurs through kerbing. Make sure the car pulls up squarely and in a straight line, and examine the tyres for worn edges. * The 1.8 and 2.0-litre models don't need a cambelt change until 96,000 miles. But swap it anyway on four-year-old cars and those with no service log. * Stiff first or reverse gears mean dirt on the clutch hub or input shaft. You can fix this by cleaning them, but check the clutch for wear as well. Glass's View Supply exceeds demand, meaning there are bargains to be had. Trade bible Glass's Consumer Values says there are many high-mileage ex-fleet cars around, so haggle hard. The V40 holds its value better than the saloon. My Volvo V40 It was Peter Tandy's 14-year-old son Richard who suggested he buy a Volvo V40. As an avid Auto Express reader, Richard reckoned the estate was best for dad after working out the tax liability and deciding it was the classiest motor within the family budget. "I'd never thought of a Volvo before," admitted Peter, a 48-year-old manager from Clitheroe in Lancashire. "I thought it had an 'old folks' image, but if a teenager is OK to be seen in one, then obviously not!" Peter got a good deal on his car, a 1.8 SE, because it came from a cancelled fleet order. Only 18 months on, he has racked up 51,000 miles commuting and ferrying around his youngest son Stephen's football team. Minor niggles have included faults with the cruise control and engine cam lifters, plus a broken armrest, but these were all fixed under warranty. "Overall, I'm very pleased with it," said Peter. "The car suits my needs and the dealer service has been terrific." Diesels lack refinement, making the 1.8 and 2.0 petrols the best bets. We'd go for a post-1998 GDI-powered model, which offers you 44mpg and adequate performance. V40 does sound better than 40 herrgårdsvagn I suppose but two letter for different body styles of the same car are kind of confusing to me at least. But despite the name and the paint Isn't she lovely. Not a term normally applied to Volvos of Old but for an estate the V40 really is quite a looker. The old Volvo image really is being cast aside with some quite good looking cars. Not radical admittedly but pleasing to the eye all the same.Probably helps that its really quite compact, you really don't expect a Volvo estate to come in quite such a small package. Granted its no mini, but it does not have the giant ever expanding girth of many of today's models. The V40 is pretty much devoid of chrome externally except for the now becoming familiar front grill. This may make it a bit plain but it is easy to keep long term. There is little on the V40 that has not been done before, many times over, but hey at least staying on the conservative side mean we don't have to cope with some new untried styling scheme which become a joke next year. The Alloy wheels are okay, if nothing special, though they look a little undersized on the car and it seems to sit quite high exaggerating the look. Inside is fairly typical Volvo, with a very practical straight laced design liberally sprinkled with dose of best Viking leather work for that up market appeal . A smattering of Forest graces the interior too, though not in the places you expect like the dash and centre console. Instead it confines itself to slips of trim and the gear knob. The dash and controls are liberally splashed about in random shapes and patterns, though they are at least pretty much grouped fairly well. To be fair to the Volvo this has got to be one the prettiest estates they have ever managed to produce, though as yet someway off the sporty little number that the Saint (Roger Moore Era) used to drive in the sixties. Its relative compactness helps and to be frank if it was not for the badges you would be hard pressed to guess what it is. Not sure about the half black treatment of the boot mind , it looks fairly strange to my eyes. The S40 SE has all the little touches you expect at this level, heated mirrors, tinted windows etc, but it’s the way Volvo builds them in to a practical whole that is slightly different. Door bins are useable, Armrest space is useable. Many Items are fitted like fog lights, and high level rear brake light that were not so long ago extras in many cars, most have always been standard in mid and high range Volvos. Stuff like Pollen filters were all early adopted by the Swedes. There are no glitzy gadgets just solid well proven useable stuff that we really need. Like the split rear seats to expand the boot. Seats as well as being leather covered are lumbar height and recline adjustable and with the height adjusting pre-tensioned belts, and adjustable steering column allow any size of driver from your Elfin grandma to your Giant haystacks lookalike uncle to get comfortable Mitsubishi's lean burn GDi motor finds its way into the V40. This 1.8 unit is smooth and responsive for its size though not over endowed with power. It does though offer potential for great economy in lightly loaded driving situations. See link below for full explanation. High tech GDI imported motor Volvo logo fools only a few Read about GDi here Noting the problems with GDi it will be interesting to see whether the GDi motor will be retuned when low sulphur fuel is de-rigueur on the British market. ( it is close to that now with the Government fuel tax levies phasing high sulphur out) When we can guarantee that the fuel will not clog up the Cat then the GDi might just start to make for some very high economy figures. But as it stands the the GDi is just a fairly unremarkable 1.8 litre unit. It does its job without fuss but is a little stretched by a fully loaded estate body. It should be hugely reliable, as we have come to expect of a Japanese engine, but then again Volvo motors have always been fairly strong and reliable The Motor is mated to a fair five speed box and very light clutch action, the box gives reasonably swift changes without to much effort. It probably a good job to as the smallish engine and a fully loaded rear end mean the gearbox gets a good workout. Small imperfections irritate the slow acting suspension, yet it rolls quite a lot through the bends. Suggesting perhaps slight over damping and under-springing. Perhaps the American lights infected the suspension as its not quite as sharp as you may expect. Most older Volvos (BAR T,5,6 versions) have generally had long soft suspension. This probably has too but it seems slightly at odd with with its looks. It would not be too bad if the action was not quite so wooden over small imperfections. Compared to the Saloon it rides slightly harder in the rear as you would expect, with its increased carrying capacity. Soft suspension does grip mind and in the lands of Snow and perpetual darkness that are its birth place keeping a tyre in contact with the surface is probably more important than any other consideration. Brakes work fine without the noticeable intervention of ABS. Required pressure is a nice medium squeeze, not leg straining but not bottom twitchingly sensitive. The Steering though is completely numb. Rivaling Audi in lightness little feed back gets to the hands through the power assisted helm. If your looking for clues as to the available grip at the front end the Wheel gives few, better to listen for the onset of tyre squeal. That said its perfect for shopping, Jams , school runs, motorways etc all the usual Volvo haunts. At 15mph around Sainsburys car park it handles at least as well as a BMW and does not get the key down the paint work half as often. Volvos trump card is its safe image. Safety has become a major concern for modern buyers and two to one if you ask someone to name a safe car they will say "VOLVO". When you check out the features under safety heading you know the list will contain everything currently on the safety conscious buyers mental map Integrated Trim lines on Floormats Antilock Braking System Child Locks Drivers Airbag High level brake Light Pre Tensioned front Seat Belts Side Impact Protection Three Rear 3 Point Seat Belts Front Side Air Bags Add to that all the things we take for granted, like safety cells collapsible steering columns etc , and you have one solid safe modern car to look after your family. Bear in mind that Volvo had a leading role in either developing or adopting all these things and you have to give it extra brownie points. All the little touches are there too. The running lights, the lights in the door end etc. All features of modern cars and all fitted to Volvos for decades. Security is almost as well specified Central Locking Engine Immobiliser Locking Fuel Cap Locking Wheel Nuts Visible Identification Number But do Volvos get stolen? Well they don’t now , but Volvo keep developing along current lines they will one day, so at least you have some security against the thieves waking up to Volvo new found desirability. If you always fancied the strength, quality, reliability, safety of a Volvo but could not face the joke looks of old models , the new models give you all the advantages of old dressed in a reasonable suit of clothes. Interior space is excellent and the boot is as always huge and useable with its flat floor and cargo nets, though the lip is strangely high and seems like an oversight on Volvos behalf. The only trouble is with is improved looks have come a scaling down of the size making it more competitive with normal estates, Vectra, Mondeo et al and it lack of sheer size and capacity sort of defeats the whole point of a Volvo to me. Still its a nice enough car to live by its own merits in a very competitive sector. (I'm still trying to find a solution of cleaning this as it's filthy with alot of encrusted carbon and crud inside which I cannot access since it's all plastic so if anyone has any suggestions please advise, pic of inlet manifold included) I took off and cleaned the trottle valve which was very bad also and while that far took off the EGR valve which feeds all the exhaust gas to the inlet manifold. The EGR valve was again very encrusted in carbon, pics below, but a relatively easy job to clean if a bit messy. Anyway the question is that the exhaust outlay pipe on the engine looks to have been blocked with some sort of metal plug. There's a mesh filter over the outlay exhaust which would make sense to prevent any large carbon particles in getting into the valve but why would the exhaust itself be shut off and would you recommend opening it again? There's pics below of the outlay exhaust with and without the mesh, does this look like it was deliberately blocked to you? Surely if there was a problem with the valve then just disconnecting the power would block the exhaust vent in a similar fashion, I can't think why the exhaust outlay would be blocked and surely this is defeating alot of the engines efficiency since it's continuously taking in fresh cold air? Thanks for your replies. He's trying to get hold of someone to give him impartial advice, and possibly look at his car (unfortunately as he's in Scotland, I guess VT won't be much help?) Here's what he posted anyway... if anyone can offer any advice on where to go (polite requests only please ), please LMK Quote: ok, so went to volvo today, gave them a list of symptoms (hesitation, lag, jolting @2500 revs, engine missfiring, engine shutting down etc) and gave them a list of things to look at (coils, throttle body, fuel injector, valves, cylinders) and they say engine has a major build up of carbon, and its gonna need the engine stripping down and decoking (wot is that anyway?) so i goes oh, ok sure how much? £1200 they said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wot? well 600 pounds for labour, rest parts. i mean you could probably buy a new engine for that. any way they gave me a list of parts (everything from gasket to screws and washers.) they said once they strip it down theyll need new parts.. wots wrong with the current ones eh? i thought theyd just clean everything and put it back together? i am well pissed off, i mean the cars only 5 yrs old, not even done 60k miles. Tech, why is this a common problem with volvos? never here anyother car with these problems. has there been any recalls for this fault? and why does it switch off? i timed it today, and pretty much 30 mins and itll switch off. are there sensors telling the engine to switch off? if theres a carbon build up then why does the engine switch off and jolt before doing so at these particular revs? Tech id really appreciate you answering all of the above (or as many as you can) and sorry for going on about it, but with out ma car i cant get to work so its important. wanted to speak with the mechanic but he wasnt there and the salesman wasnt able to answer anything, how lame is that? i swear, i ll never buy a volvo again. 2 volvos with the same problems??? ( i dont think they even looked at my engine, probably just went "oh that problem again) " and heres the techs reply (the only person who replies on the volvo forums...) "If it is heavy Carbon Then a good Fuel injection cleaning should take care of that.Im not sure why they want to rip the engine apart unless the oil is really sludgey. If that is the case then I have seen people ad a desludging additive and clean most of the engine out. Before you autherise anything you make sure you talk to the tech and make him explain everthing to you all the way to it stalling.Make him show you everything!!! Then tell them you will get back to them and make them wauit for you. Im not trying to be a jerk towards you but it also pisses me off when I hear stuff like this happening. Get all the details and let me know what they say. " so , are volvo ripping me off here? can any other normal garage do this? I think he's had most of his questions answered, except for where he can get it looked at, and a more thorough answer than "it's a carbon issue", which seems to have been arrived at through nothing more than guesswork...
