So why did they bother making it? Tweet this Andrew Anthony The Guardian, Saturday 10 April 2010 Yes, the C30 2.0D SE is a Volvo, but not as we know it. Photographs: Simon Stuart-Miller It is the harsh fate of some car manufacturers to be imprisoned by success. For, in capturing the public's imagination, a brand image can also be held captive by that same imagination. Such is the case with Volvo. It's almost impossible to say the word without picturing something reliably heavy. Not only are Volvos substantial, but they're also not what you'd call fun.Lumbered with the weight of the world, the Volvo is stoical, but also sombre and filled with the kind of existential sadness that only a long, dark Scandinavian winter can produce. It's no surprise that Kurt Wallander, Henning Mankel's fictional detective, drives a Volvo. His model is an XC70, a proper Arctic battleship of a car. Baggy and brooding, the XC70 and Wallander are made for each other, a lugubrious meeting of man and machine. It just wouldn't look right if he drove, say, a Ford Focus. And it wouldn't look much less wrong if he drove a Volvo C30. This is a Volvo that lacks something. Namely about four foot of back end and half a tonne of bulk.Aside from the badge and grille, there's little about the C30 that says, "Volvo". You might as well be in a Ford Focus, except the Focus is a much better thought-out car. A left-hand ignition is never a good start. It runs counter to natural law. Like trousers with the fly down the side, it's one of those things you'll always struggle to get used to.Then there's the colour. Mine was called Orange Flame, which was oddly reminiscent of the shade I once painted my kitchen when I lived in a cramped batch pad and wanted it to look more interesting. Of course, the result was that it looked like a cramped batch pad with an orange kitchen. And much the same applies to the C30. It looks like a cramped three-door with an Orange Flame finish. As you'd expect with a two-litre engine, there's plenty of pep, and it purrs on the open road, but in the city it's not a smooth drive. A Volvo, at least in the correctional facility of the popular imagination, should be a giant padded coffin on wheels. But the C30 comes with a suspension that could unnerve the dead. However, if it's not what I imagined, the point about the imagination is that it's not real. And in reality Volvo has been part of Ford for more than a decade and is due to be sold to the Chinese manufacturer Geely. It's only slightly more Swedish than Kenneth Branagh. Why the C30 isn't just a classy Focus, which is what it should be and perhaps wants to be, is not obvious. The Focus is a great car for what it is. The C30 is a mediocre car for what it isn't: a real Volvo.Volvo D30 2.0d SE Price £18,610Top speed 127mph Acceleration 0-62mph in 8.8 secondsAverage consumption 49.6mpg CO2 emissions 151g/km Eco rating 6/10Bound for Any bump in the road In a word Swede-ish Printable version Send to a friend Share Clip Contact us larger | smaller Email Close Recipient's email address Your first name Your surname Add a note (optional) Your IP address will be logged Share Close Short link for this page: http://gu.com/p/2fpdh Digg reddit Google Bookmarks Twitter del.icio.us StumbleUpon Newsvine livejournal Facebook Mixx it! 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: First Drives Volvo V50 1.6D DRIVe Base diesel estate benefits from eco makeover – and £35 road tax. Auto Express Car Reviews By Paul BaileyDecember 2008 Rating: A Volvo estate in the same £35 Band B tax bracket as the most fuel-efficient superminis? It sounds fanciful, but that’s exactly what the Swedish firm is offering with this V50. It’s one of a range of Volvos – badged DRIVe – that goes on sale next year. The line-up also includes the S40 saloon and C30 hatch. The V50 has been designed to return 62.8mpg and emit a tax-friendly 118g/km of CO2 – about the same as a diesel Fiat 500. And yet it still offers the safety, style and versatility of a traditional Volvo estate. If you want to buy the V50 with a 1.6-litre diesel, you can only get it in DRIVe spec. It has drag-reducing alloys and low-rolling-resistance tyres, plus a front spoiler borrowed from the sporty T5. There’s also a revised radiator grille to improve airflow around the car. The newcomer looks slinky, and the suspension is 10mm lower to help it slip through the air more easily.EconomyThe engine management system has been updated to enhance economy over performance, and the gearbox gets longer ratios. In addition, a dash indicator tells you the optimum time to change gear. This takes into account road conditions, such as slopes, and if you follow its lead, you never feel as if you’re shifting too early. Nor do you get the sensation that you’re driving a car which is biased towards economy. However, the diesel engine is a bit clattery, and the chassis changes have done nothing to improve the V50’s harsh ride or lifeless steering. The firm’s aim was to give buyers all the benefits of a low-emission car but without the compromises, and refinement aside, it has met its goal.We can’t help feeling that Volvo could have achieved even more by fitting its DRIVe models with a stop-start system to cut emissions and consumption further. But the company has still managed to create a sub-120g/km premium compact estate before anyone else.Rival: Passat BluemotionWell built Volkswagen estate is a larger and more versatile load carrier than the Volvo. But with a figure of 129g/km, it can’t match the V50 DRIVe for CO2 emissions, plus it lags behind in terms of economy. It remains a stylish-looking car, especially with the addition of the new alloy wheels. Plus, it feels solid and well built, and offers a decent level of practicality for its size. It’s not a thrill a minute from behind the wheel, and the rattle of the diesel never lets you forget what kind of engine is under the bonnet. But by offering savings on running costs for a £250 premium, Volvo should easily hit its 15 per cent sales target for the V50 and S40. Volvo V70
Volvo S80
Volvo XC70
Volvo XC90 The S60 marked a clean break for Volvo from the boxy design that many associated the brand with in the 1980s and 90s. Its design, done by a design team lead by Peter Horbury, built upon the styling of the S80 and was the most marked departure from traditional Volvo styling since Horbury joined the firm in 1992. Accordingly, Volvo marketed the car as heralding a “Revolvolution.”[6]
The S60 was built upon Volvo’s P2 platform,[7] which was shared with other Volvo models like the S80, V70, XC70 and finally the XC90.
The S60 was refreshed in 2005. The exterior was updated with body-colored side moldings and bumpers, as well as new headlamps. The interior received some updates as well, with new seats, trim, and an updated center console. The Four-C chassis from the S60 R became an option on some S60s.[8] The T5 engine was also reengineered from 2.3 to 2.4 liters and received an increase of 10 bhp (7 kW; 10 PS).
[edit] S60 Police specification (UK & EU)
Police specification models came about through Volvo’s extensive work alongside the users of the vehicles and Police Fleet Management departments. As a result the Police specification vehicles have a striking difference from original showroom model. Firstly the suspension was up-rated to deal the demands of Police work; this included fitting the front suspension of the D5 model variant (as the suspension was designed to deal with the heavier diesel engine). Nivomat self-levelling suspension was also fitted to the rear to ensure correct geometry of the vehicle, regardless of the weight carried. On early models, the clutch was also replaced with the stronger D5 unit.
A larger specification battery and 110A alternator was also fitted to run all the extra equipment, along with a dedicated Police fuse box in the boot. Extra wiring looms are also fitted specially for the Police radios and other equipment, including CCTV cameras. Additional electrical noise suppression has been added so as not to interfere with the sensitive electronics the police use.
The speedometers in the vehicles are calibrated from the factory and do not require recalibration unless the wheel and overall rolling diameters are changed.
305 mm (12.0 in) vented front disc brakes were also fitted alongside special brake pads (and wear indicators) specially designed to cope with high-speed pursuits.
During 2001–2004 the 2.3 liter T5 engine was used and in 2005-2009 the 2.4 liter T5 engine was used. Also beyond common speculation and myths, the engines are not chipped or modified specially for police use: they are complete factory spec but in 'exceptional cases' the speed limiter (250 km/h) may have been removed.
[edit] S60 R 2004 Volvo S60 R Rear view of the Volvo S60 R First introduced in 2003, Volvo's S60 R boasted Haldex AWD mated to a 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp) / 400 N·m (300 ft·lbf) inline-5. The 2004–2005 models came with a 6-speed manual transmission, or an available 5-speed automatic which allowed only 258 lb·ft (350 N·m) torque in 1st and 2nd gears. The 2006–2007 models came with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The new 6-speed automatic transmission allowed the full torque of 295 lb·ft (400 N·m) in all gears.
Other aspects which set the R apart from standard S60s were the large Brembo front and rear four-piston brakes, fully forged engine internals, optional 18" 5 spoke "Pegasus" wheels, blue faced "R" gauges, standard HID headlights, as well as the Four-C suspension system. Four-C (a short name for "Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept") allows the user to select from three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Advanced. "Comfort" attempts to soften the car over bumps, while "Advanced" firms the suspension considerably and gives more aggressive throttle response - a setting Volvo implies is for use on the race track. This is accomplished through a drive by wire throttle, allowing the same pedal travel to result in different performance when the appropriate mode is selected, Öhlins electronically-controlled shock absorbers that can adjust themselves 500 times a second, and a complex series of sensors throughout the body of the vehicle.[9]
The S60 R continued the tradition of "R" cars for Volvo beginning in 1995 with the introduction of the 850 T-5 R.
Top Gear reviewed the car in episode 9[10] of series 2. They panned the overly complicated and intrusive traction control system, and it set a slow lap time of 1:35.0. But they also found it to be very comfortable and civilized, and especially recommended the estate version. Jeremy Clarkson noted "More like a miniature version of the Rolls-Royce Phantom than a serious competitor to the BMW M3."

Volvo XC70
Volvo XC60 The second generation S60 began production in Ghent, Belgium on May 17, 2010, with an expected annual production of 90,000 vehicles.[11] Official photos were released in November 2009, and the car was publicly unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.[12] It debuted as a 2011 model in North America.
This new sedan will show off Volvo's completely new design language already seen in the Volvo XC60 concept. It will ride on the same platform as the XC60. Volvo has confirmed that the new S60 will become the true new rival for the Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4 and the BMW 3-series, as Volvo is undergoing new product alignment. New features include the new large Volvo iron symbol, parallel to the grille day running lamps, and larger spaced letters in the brand name on rear. A new safety feature, Pedestrian Detection, will be added to automatically apply brakes if a pedestrian is detected in front of the car and the driver does not react in time.[13]

In 2006, At Speed Motorsports entered an all-wheel-drive S60R in five races of the Speed World Challenge GT class. It was driven by Michael Galati and finished 14th in the overall standings, winning one race (at Mosport). For some years the S60 was the car of the factory Volvo team in the Swedish Touring Car Championship, where it finished 2nd in the drivers' championship twice and won the manufacturers' title once.
Since 2009, two S60s are competing in the full Speed World Challenge GT Championship run by K-Pax Racing, with former champions Andy Pilgrim and Randy Pobst as drivers. In 2010, Randy Pobst won the GT driver's championship and Volvo won the GT manufacturer's championship.

This is a fuel-saving, carbon dioxide-staunching 108bhp 1.6-litre turbodiesel S40, that achieves an impressive 104g/km when equipped with £250-worth of optional Start-Stop hardware. That happens to be the same carbon dioxide figure as for the outgoing, second generation Toyota Prius and it’s usefully lower than the 114gkm achieved by the Focus Econetic whose gene pool it shares. The Volvo’s 72.4mpg combined fuel consumption is, by odd coincidence, the same as for the new Prius – though the Focus manages 78.4mpg - and it also qualifies in band B for road fund duty besides attracting a low 13percent benefit-in-kind tax for company car users. So purely on a running-cost basis, this is an attractive car. Without stop-start – curiously, Volvo is test-marketing the S40 1.6D DRIVe in both forms – it scores 119g/km and 62.8mpg combined. The same figures are achieved with identical hardware in the sister V50 estate and C30 coupe, the neat three-door needing aerodynamic modifications that include under-floor panelling, an extended roof spoiler and a rear diffuser to score the same numbers, alterations that make it look quite sporting. Aerodynamic mods for the S40 include a partial blanking off of the radiator grille, suspension lowered by 10mm and some rather stylish alloy wheels whose slender cooling slots limit turbulence. Also included are an intelligent alternator (it mainly charges when you’re coasting and braking), low rolling resistance tyres, a recalibrated engine management system, thin-viscosity transmission oil and power steering that draws less energy. And your chances of achieving pleasing consumption figures are improved by a gearshift indicator in the instrument pack. What’s it like? Driving the Volvo S40 has never been a particularly edifying experience despite its close relationship to the Ford Focus, and in physical terms the S40 DRIVe is no better, and in some respects a little worse. Its lowered suspension means a less cushioning from a ride that wasn’t great in the first place and the taller gearing requires more shifting, though not to a testing extent. But, the possibility of achieving exceptional fuel economy figures adds a worthwhile diversion to the driving process, especially as the standard trip computer allows you to monitor your miserliness. The stop-start equipment has the scope to improve consumption by four to five percent, but there is a refinement penalty, the diesel’s high compression provoking engine shake that’s too apparent on shut-down and start-up. That may well lead some to hit the stop-start button in the centre console, switch it off and avoid the shudders. The diesel Mini, which shares the same powertrain, suffers the same problem, but not to quite the same extent. Should I buy one? If low running costs and doing a bit to avert global warming are your goals, this car promises real gains. Trouble is, the S40 remains the disappointing car that it has always been, and while its fuel consumption will warm your heart, the driving experience will rarely have the same effect. But with numbers like these it’s worth another look, as are its more stylish V50 and C30 siblings.
