6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: Long Term Tests Volvo C30 D5 R-Design SE Sport Does Swedish hatch have real showroom appeal? We become a salesman for a few hours to find out... Auto Express Car Reviews By Mat WatsonOctober 2008 With new car sales at an all-time low, it’s tough being a dealer at the moment. However, life is surely a little bit easier for those who sell desirable models such as our Volvo C30.In my last long-term report (Issue 1,013), I explained how the car’s design was attracting so much attention, I was getting a bit paranoid that I’d left the boot open. One passer-by was so interested in the Volvo, she actually stopped me in the street to demand a look round it. Her name was Lea-Anne Falandysz from London, and it turns out she was in the market for a new small executive car. So I invited her to my local Volvo dealership, HR Owen Regents Park, to see if I could actually flog her a C30.Any salesman worth his salt knows it’s key to get potential customers behind the wheel. Now, I freely admit the C30’s handling isn’t a strong point. It looks the part, especially in racy R-Design trim, but when it comes to on-road thrills, it fails to deliver. But this isn’t the point of the Volvo. It’s all about travelling in comfort and style. And in this respect, nothing in this class comes close.Lea-Anne agreed, and actually thought the C30 was more entertaining than her Audi A3 (I wasn’t going to argue myself out of a sale). Part of this was down to the engine. First of all, she couldn’t believe it was a diesel. That’s not surprising. The 2.4-litre D5 has a roary, rather than rattly, exhaust note which can confuse you about what pump to select at the filling station.Lea-Anne does a lot of town driving, and so asked whether she should get the automatic. After all, they are less tiresome in traffic and go well with torquey diesel engines. At least, that’s usually the case. But I’ve tried the C30 D5 with an auto box and wouldn’t recommend it. Ratio changes are so slow you can almost feel yourself age between gears, while the torque converter seems to drain all the engine’s power. So then, a D5 manual was the best option. Sale almost closed. All Lea-Anne had to do was select some options.Apart from the R-Design trim, two-tone paint and parking sensors, the other must-have extra is the Garmin sat-nav. This is a portable system and comes with a dealer-fit dash mount. On the downside, its cradle does look a bit cheap. But the whole set-up costs £365 compared to £1,500 for the vastly inferior factory-fit guidance unit.Finally, I showed Lea-Anne another option I like: the hard parcel shelf. Big mistake. Up until this point she hadn’t paid much attention to the C30’s boot. Now, though, I had revealed the car’s Achilles heel.There really is no room back there. The other day I bought an LCD flat screen TV but had to return it to the shop for a refund because I couldn’t get the box into the boot to take it home! Needless to say, it was this lack of luggage space that ultimately cost me the sale.As I said, it must be tough being a car dealer... Maybe I’m not as trendy as Mat, but to me the C30 looks awful from all angles except the front. I’ve also got issues with its engine. Performance is strong and the average economy is reasonable, but get too carried away and your mpg soon plummets.Chris ThorpRoad test editor Other Reports REPORT On fleet since:April 2008 Running costs:41.6ppm Mileage:6,325 Costs to date:None Engine / Power:2.4 litre/178bhp Options Fitted:BiXenon pack (£775), sunroof (£700), met paint (£500), Garmin sat-nav (£365), rear park assist (£350), high performance audio system (£250), passenger airbag cut-off switch (£25). Certainly not the engine: you’re probably familiar with this five-cylinder turbocharged D5, as it features in every model Volvo produces, so it’s no surprise it’s been slotted into this stylish coupe. Tuned to give 177bhp, it’s the most powerful diesel in the C30 range. What’s it like? The D5 has its faults, but it does a lot to compliment the C30. Once you’re in its torque band, there’s ample acceleration and a flexibility that gives good around-town performance. But our test car had the five-speed auto that exacerbates the D5’s lethargy; its lack of urge at very low revs is painfully obvious, and the lengthy lag before the gearbox reacts to the throttle means that kick-down can be disconcerting. This doesn’t make the Volvo a bad car to drive, rather one that encourages cruising rather than sprints: it’s an effortless motorway vehicle, and it’s lovely to be in with an impressively solid, premium-feel cabin. However, premium feel comes at a premium price: £22,295 for the D5 in SE trim. And that’s before you add the inevitable list of options. Should I Buy One? If budget isn’t an issue, and you want refinement, style and quality, then yes. If it’s sporting ability you’re after, you’d be better off looking at the competition. Expert Rating: Before you read the words Volvo and diesel and turn the page, it's worth giving this one a second chance. Andy Enright reports on why the C30 D5 is something rather specialThere are some people who will clock that this car is a Volvo diesel and give a brief involuntary shudder. I used to be of that persuasion. My father owned a Volvo diesel so unrefined that these days he would have been slapped with an ASBO. I can even now recall the sound of that engine firing up in the morning. There was the first clonk of the key, followed by the pregnant pause while the glow plugs warmed up, followed by the sort of noise you'd expect to hear at the back of a Waltzer. Things are a good deal different now and Volvo's latest C30 D5 shows quite how much things have changed.Where Vic's old 760GLE had just 124 asthmatic horsepower to lug around a car that weighed more than the Eurasian plate, the C30 D5 has a spry 180bhp to power a car that's neat, light and compact. Four trim levels are offered, opening with the SE and R-Design Sport at £19,495. Then comes the R-Design SE Sport at £20,745 with SE Lux variants topping off the range at £20,995. All versions are supplied with the Geartronic five-speed transmission. This offers the convenience and smoothness of a proper automatic gearbox equipped with a torque converter but also adds a little sass with the driver able to select gears sequentially. The D5 diesel engine is a modern common rail 2.4-litre unit with five cylinders and is mounted transversely across the front of this C30, driving the front wheels. It's probably the most appealing engine in the whole C30 model range offering decent economy and even more torque than the storming T5 petrol engine (350 vs 320Nm). It makes this peak torque figure at between 1,750 and 3,250rpm which mean that you won't need to rev the engine to kingdom come to get decent punch from a standstill out onto a roundabout or when zipping into fast moving motorway traffic."Volvo is turning out some very well rounded cars. The C30 D5 could well be the most attractive of the lot"From a standstill you'll need just 7.8 seconds to get to 60mph and unlike most performance figures you read in magazines that are the work of skilled road testers with zero mechanical sympathy, Volvo's Geartronic box will allow you to replicate this sprinting ability with metronomic efficiency. Just stand with your foot on the brake until you can feel the gearbox start to strain against the torque converter, lift the brake and bury the throttle. The C30's traction control systems and gearbox software does the rest. You just sit there, steer and make sure you don't accelerate into something that's going to spoil your day. Where conditions allow, the acceleration only lets up with 140mph showing on the clock, a decent performance for a diesel in this bracket. Fuel economy is predictably good too, with an urban figure of 29.7mpg, an extra urban showing of 52.3mpg and an overall figure of 40.9mpg. These figures may not be quite so easy to replicate. An attractive carbon emissions figure of 182g/km will also put the C30 D5 on the wish lists of many company car user choosers granted a £25k budget. Well worth sneaking onto the options list and past the gimlet eye of your fleet manager is the Premium Sound system which features a digital 5x130w Alpine amplifier with Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound and no fewer than ten Dynaudio speakers. So much for the nuts and bolts of the C30 D5. What is it and who's it aimed at? Based on the chassis of the S40 saloon, the C30 takes Volvo's contemporary design direction and smashes it out of the park. If you're still not quite comfortable with the concept of a sexy looking Volvo, this one will leave you wondering exactly when the sands of motoring fashion shifted under your feet. This is the fourth car spawned from the S40 platform, the others being the V50 estate and the C70 convertible. Volvo had long earmarked this fourth model but weren't quite sure what it was going to be. Taking a wait and see approach, the company consulted its customers, looked at the way the industry was moving, consulted its magic 8-ball and came up with the C30 `SportsCoupe', a model that drives down the average age of Volvo buyers by a good few years. The company is keen to stress its similarity to the old P1800ES, although they are a little more reticent about comparing it to a model a little fresher in most customers minds, the 480 series, built between 1985 and 1995. The design brief was formed from various customer clinics and when it took shape, it was loose and relatively easy to fulfil - customers wanted something desirable, low and wide with big wheels and four seats. They also fancied lots of standard equipment and a punchy stereo. Given that latter day small Volvos have had a rich design element to their interiors, translating that to the exterior wasn't a tough job for Volvo's stylists. Some things are reassuringly Swedish. Safety hasn't been skimped on and as well as the usual airbags and seat belt tensioners, the C30 serves up WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and even the option of BLIS (Blind Spot Information System). This acts much like an extra set of eyes and utilizes digital camera technology mounted in the door mirrors to monitor the areas 3m to each side and up to 9.5m behind the driver. If a vehicle enters this area, a symbol appears on the windscreen pillar near the rear view mirror to indicate that something's there when you take a quick look towards the mirror. Active at speeds above 10km/h, this system isn't the only safety benefit buyers of the C30 enjoy. Special water repellent glass is fitted to the mirrors and side windows. Water beads up on the glass and the airstream quickly clears it, leaving unimpeded visibility. The C30 package is an amalgam of all that's best about modern Volvo. The D5 is the pick of the range. It might take a long memory to realise it, but Volvo has come a very long way.Facts At A Glance CAR: Volvo C30 D5 PRICES: £19,495-£20,995 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 14 CO2 EMISSIONS: 151-209g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 140mph / 0-60mph 7.8s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 29.7mpg/ (extra urban) 52.3mpg/ (combined) 40.9mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and curtain airbags, WHIPS seats, side impact protection system WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/width/height 4248/1780/1450mm Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Tuesday February 12 Send by Messenger Email this article Print ADVERTISEMENT if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object();

Review & Road Test Finance Full Specification Environmental NCAP Safety Rating Options More Print Information VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONICWhat do Volvo cars mean to you? They're Swedish, they're safe and they tend to be a little bit boxy. If that roughly sums up your knowledge of the brand, it's about time you gave it another chance. For a long time Volvo did appear to be trapped in a square prison from a design standpoint but things changed and the C30 hatchback was as instrumental as any model in changing them. The C30 is certainly Swedish and it's very safe but its designers were clearly thinking well outside the box.
The C30 was Volvo's attempt at cashing in on the burgeoning market for premium hatchbacks. That's family hatchback sized cars with premium badges and, hopefully, more of an upmarket theme. The major players in this sector have traditionally been the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3 but Volvo believed it could muscle in with an overtly sporty little number of its own. The C30's sleek lines borrow heavily from the P1800 ES, the Volvo used by Roger Moore in the original Sixties TV series of 'The Saint', though also employ a big modern twist. VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONICModels Covered:
(3dr Hatch, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.4, 2.5 turbo petrol, 1.6, 2.0, 2.4 diesel [S, ES, SE, SE Sport, SE Lux, R-Design, R-Design Sport, R-Design SE Sport])
VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONICThe C30 emerged with a comprehensive engine range right off the bat. There was nothing new about any of the units with Volvo simply using the powerplants from its S40 saloon and V50 estate ranges. Petrol-wise, there were 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4 litre options but buyers could also opt for the fiery performance of the 2.5-litre turbocharged engine or take a more environmentally-friendly route with a version of the 1.8 which could run on E85 bio ethanol. Diesel customers had 1.6D, 2.0D and 2.4D engines to consider. When the car was launched in October 2006, the trim levels were S, SE, SE Sport and SE Lux but these were later supplemented by the slick looking R-Design variants. The R-Design Sport and R-Design SE Sport models were introduced in July 2007 with more extrovert body-styling kits and sporty interior trim upgrades. They gave the C30 a useful dose of extra attitude. Late in 2008, Volvo announced the eco-friendly DRIVe version of the 1.6D model.
A facelift in autumn 2009 brought a sharper look to the front end styling and a simplified trim level range (S, SE, SE Lux and R-Design) but otherwise the recipe remained largely the same. Hot on the heels of the facelift, Volvo introduced a 2.0-litre five-cylinder diesel engine and revised the engine naming structure. Buyers could order D2 (1.6 113bhp), D3 (2.0 148bhp) or D4 (2.0 175bhp) diesels all offering strong economy. VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONICThe C30 has room for four adults, the rear seats folding flat to form a useful loading space in the back when you have only two on board. Although it shares the same wheelbase as the S40 saloon, the tape measure shows this car to be fully 22cm shorter and it shares not one panel with its four-door stablemate, instead offering a very different look and feel. It scarcely seems possible that so much was pared from the overhangs of the saloon car but such is the wheel-at-each-corner stance of the C30 that it measures just 4,248mm from stem to stern. That inevitably means that bootspace is at something of a premium but at 433 litres, it's not too bad and you can always extend it to 947 litres by flattening the split-folding rear seat. The oddly shaped hatch opening may present problems when loading bulky items.
There are fascinating design touches everywhere you look around the car, from the 'floating' instrument panel to the horseshoe tail lamps, the deep arc of the rear glass and the pumped-up Volvo shoulders that run from the front to the rear lights in one uninterrupted sweep. Some things are reassuringly Swedish. Safety hasn't been skimped on and as well as the usual airbags and seat belt tensioners, the C30 serves up WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and there was even the option of the BLIS (Blind Spot Information System). VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONICThe C30 demands a premium over conventional family hatchbacks but it looks affordable compared to the likes of Audi's A3 and BMW's 1-Series. Prices open at around £10,500 for the 1.6-litre petrol model in S trim with a 56 registration plate. Across the range, the SE commands a £500 premium, the SE Lux is around £300 on top of that and you'll need another £300 for the SE Sport.
Go for a 2.0-litre petrol model in SE Sport trim with an 08-plate and you'll be looking at £14,675, while equivalent price for the powerful T5 engine would be close to £15,500. The 1.6-litre diesels are priced similarly to the petrol units and a range-topping 2.4 D5 model on 08 plates with an automatic gearbox comes in at around £16,500 depending on the trim. VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONICThe C30 is solidly built and owners report few significant problems. Even in the hands of motoring journalists - traditionally some of the most neglectful drivers around - the C30 has proven a doughty counterpart. Look for worn tyres and brakes on the T5 model as these may have been driven hard. If you wear jewellery, it's worth bearing in mind that some of the interior plastics scratch fairly easily. VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONIC(approx based on a 2007 T5) A clutch assembly is around £180, whilst an exhaust system is in the region of £350. Front brake pads will require the thick end of £60, whilst rears are £50 a pair. A new alternator will be £170, but a new starter motor is a fairly reasonable £110. VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONICThe engine range on the C30 is agreeably broad, taking in everything from the modest 100PS 1.6-litre petrol unit, to the decidedly immodest 230PS T5 turbo five-cylinder powerplant more widely renowned as the engine that flings the Ford Focus ST up the road. In between these two in the petrol line-up lie 125PS 1.8, 145PS 2.0 and 170PS 2.4i engines. Diesel drivers get the choice of a 109PS 1.6D, also available in eco-friendly 'DRIVe' guise. Plus there are 136PS 2.0D and 180PS D5 units. Your only other option is the 1.8-litre FlexiFuel engine that can run non normal unleaded or renewable E85 bioethanol. On the road, the more powerful C30 models can feel slightly nose heavy but traction is so good that when you get it right, the car just slingshots out of a bend with no drama, and very little in the way of torque steer. The T5 petrol unit also produces one of the most infectious engine notes around. Wet traction off the line isn't the greatest but lateral grip is superb. If you want to really exploit the C30's performance, you'll need to steer clear of the automatic option which really takes an edge off the car's punch. The six-speed manual version is certainly the smart pick, although an advanced, automatic twin clutch transmission called Volvo Powershift is also available. VOLVO C30 D5 SE SPORT 3DR GEARTRONICIf you thought Volvos were dull, the C30 could be the car to relieve you of that misapprehension. It's an attractively styled small hatchback with lots of character and design flare. There are better executed cars in the premium hatchback class but few that make more of a statement than the Volvo C30. Introduction
