So why then is volvo introducing a version of its popular v70 estate with a fairly puny 1.6-litre turbo-diesel? The answer is in the search for less: lower emissions and cheaper running costs from a reduced fuel economy. The new v70 1.6D returns 57.6mpg, produces 129g/km Co2 and has a lowly group D road tax band rating. The new model could prove a welcome boost for volvo’s v70 range, which faces competition not only from such traditional rivals as the audi a6, BMW 5-Series and vW Passat but also from a raft of MPvs and 4x4s, not least volvo’s own XC60. nevertheless, volvo says the v70 is still the biggest seller in the executive estate market. The main models in the v70 range are the diesel engines with the 2.0D, 2.4D and D5 accounting for 90 per cent of all v70 sales. volvo believes that its eco-friendly 1.6D Drive will boost that figure. When we tested the v70 2.0D, which was at the time the smallest-engined car in the range, we found it pleasant enough to drive, although not exactly oozing excess power. While the £24,995 2.0D produces 136bhp and gets from 0 to 60mph in 11.1 seconds, the £22,745 1.6D Drive musters only 109bhp and takes 12.8 seconds to reach 60mph. The upside of that lack of performance though is that the 2.0-litre can’t match the 1.6D’s average fuel economy and emissions at 57.7mpg and 129 g/km. Visually there is little to spot it from the rest of the range. as well as fitting low rolling resistance tyres, tweaking the engine and introducing an electric steering pump, volvo has given the gearbox taller gearing. SEARCH MOTORING for: Plus, the 1.6D engine weighs 61kg less than the 2.0D. The 1.6-litre actually does the job of powering such a big car better than you might suspect, provided you don’t expect too much of it. If you are looking for a meaty engine with plenty of hefty pulling power that will be eager from low revs, you will have to look further up the v70 range. While its performance is perfectly adequate, you do have to concentrate and not let the revs drop on steep hills, otherwise you will have to change down a gear as the 1.6D simply doesn’t have the urge. Also, although it’s not unrefined it can’t quite match volvo’s larger diesel engines for smoothness. once you have tuned in to the fact that the 1.6D cannot be driven as lazily as its more powerful turbo-diesel stablemates, it’s easy enough to live with, at least when lightly laden. However, if the car is fully loaded with five people and luggage it’s going to feel less sprightly. Otherwise the driving experience is good. the gear change and clutch are well weighted, the brakes feel strong and this new model feels as safe and stable as any in the v70 range. No v70 is a match for audi’s a6 avant and BMW’s 5-Series touring when it comes to handling and this car’s new steering certainly doesn’t help as it is not over-endowed with feel. Nevertheless, while not particularly nimble on flowing roads the handling is still more than adequate for an estate. The light steering makes the v70 easy enough to manoeuvre in town although the ride can feel firm over potholes. inside, the cabin is well designed and well built. everything is easy to use and the seats are excellent. While the v70’s 1,600-litre boot may not match that of the audi a6 avant or BMW 5-Series, the Swedish car’s load area is practically shaped and the seats can be quickly and easily folded. This 1.6D is available in £22,745 Setrim with standard 17-inch alloy wheels, electronic climate control, eight-speaker stereo system and a wide range of safety features. Provided you are aware what you are buying and are prepared to live with the slowest v70, the 1.6D makes sense with its high mpg and low running costs. Don’t expect it to make light work of heavy loads though; you will need a bigger engine for that.
