Volvo 700 & 900 Series From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search This article needs additional citations for verification. (August 2007)  It has been suggested that this article be split into multiple articles. (Discuss) Volvo 700 & 900 Manufacturer Volvo Cars Production 1982–1998 produced 1,430,000 Predecessor Volvo 200 series (which continued) Successor Volvo 850 Volvo S80 Class Mid-size luxury car Executive car Layout FR layout The Volvo 700 and 900 series are two ranges of mid-size car manufactured by Volvo Cars in the 1980s and 1990s. The 700 series was introduced in 1982, followed in 1990 by the 900 series. The 700, designed by Jan Wilsgaard, was originally to have been a replacement for the 200 series, but production of that model continued. The most visible differences between the 700 and the 900 series were the more rounded corners on the body of the latter, and a somewhat better-appointed interior. The 960 was substantially revised for the 1995 model year, improving the handling. The range was first augmented and finally supplanted by the Volvo 850 in 1993, with the last of the 900s being sold in 1998. Some 900 series were built as chassis for ambulances and hearses after the main production run had been completed. This series, ending with the 940, S90 and V90 were the last of the rear wheel drive cars from Volvo. Jan Wilsgaard, head of Volvo's Design and Styling team, proposed over 50 new designs for the new car. It was introduced to the US in 1982 for the 1983 model year as the 760 GLE sedan. This new design was criticized by the media when released: Gordon Murray of Autocar Magazine said, "To me it's obscene! That goes right against the grain of what everybody else is trying to do. To me it looks like a European version of a North American car. It produces the same amount of power as a 2600 or 3500 — in this day and age it disgusts me to see something about like that. It's a definite step backwards." All that changed however when Autocar and Car & Driver got their hands on a turbo intercooled 760; they said it was one of the best handling and fastest accelerating cars they had seen in a while, thundering from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in under 8 seconds.[citation needed] 1984–1985 Volvo 760 Turbo sedan (Australia) Turbocharged and intercooled variants were added in 1984, station wagon variants and the 740 – the 760's lower-specification sibling – were introduced for the 1985 model year. In 1985 Electronic Traction Control system was introduced. For the 1988 model year, the 760 received numerous updates. From the outside, the most noticeable of the over 2,000 changes were the revised front sheetmetal, including an aluminium hood, recessed windscreen wipers, and new aerodynamic headlights. Inside, all 760s were equipped with a new electronic climate control (ECC), a revised dashboard, three-position tilt steering, and a new stereo system. Underneath, sedans received the same multi-link independent rear suspension that was used on the 780.[1] Along with the revised dash, the interior saw the addition of a revised dome light and many fabric accent pieces. The Volvo 760 was also used as a police car in several countries. East German leader Erich Honecker also often used this Volvo in his governmental car pool. For its final year of production, 1990, 760 sedans received tail lights in the style of the Volvo 780 (see below), and minor interior changes. The 760 was discontinued after the 1990 model year (with production ending on 27 June 1990), and was replaced by the Volvo 960, an evolutionary update of the 760 chassis. The Volvo 740 outlived the 760, remaining for another two years. All 760s were built in Kalmar, Sweden, or Ghent, Belgium. The 740 was intended to be a mid-size car that offered a bit more style, performance, and luxury than the venerable 200 series. The '4' in the model name had once signified a four-cylinder engine, but by the time of the introduction of the 740 it simply meant less luxurious equipment as four- and six- cylinder engines were fitted across the range. Volvo 740 wagon (US) In the U.S., the 740 was offered from 1985 to 1992 as a 4-door sedan (sometimes referred to as the 744) and a 5-door station wagon (also known as the 745). Production of the 740 ceased in late 1992, though the engine, transmission, chassis, and other details lived on in the Volvo 940 (see below), which was essentially a facelifted 740. Volvo 700-series sedan (US) In 1990 the 740 received a minor facelift with new composite headlamps and 780-style tail lights. In 1991, both the 740 and the newly introduced 940 received an updated dashboard, similar in appearance to the ones found in the 760. The 740 remained mostly unchanged for the 1992 model year, and was phased out in 1993 in favour of the Volvo 940. Aside from styling, 1990 marked a number of mechanical improvements to the 740 series. The B230 motor received larger 13 mm (0.5 in) connecting rods. The 740 Turbo switched from the Garrett T3-series turbocharger to the Mitsubishi TD04 series, offering quicker spool-up and better low-RPM boost at the expense of top-end performance. The fuel system was upgraded from Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.2 to 2.4 (in 1988 for naturally aspirated cars, 1990 for Turbo cars). The newer fuel system offered onboard diagnostics, which are easily accessible from under the hood, and require no special equipment. In 1993, the final year for the 740, the mechanical engine cooling fan was replaced with an electric fan. In short, many of the mechanical lackings of the 1985-89 740s were ironed out in the 1990-92 model years. The 1990-93 Volvo 700-series cars may very well represent one of the most reliable 4-door passenger sedans of its era due to a limited number of engineering limitations and solid build quality. Trim levels were GL, GLE and GLT worldwide; Continental markets had some exceptions to this rule. The most interesting exception was perhaps the 740 Turbo 16v sold only in Italy. This car used the B204FT engine found also in the 780 on the same market and it came with some unusual extras such as the ECC from the 760. The 780 became available in Europe in 1986 and in United States a year later. Like its predecessor, the 780 was designed and built by Carrozzeria Bertone in Turin, Italy. The hood, trunk, and roof lines were all slightly lower than the standard 700 series profile, and the C-pillar was wider and had a more gradual slope down to the trunk. Headroom was improved over the 262C because of Bertone’s mere 1 cm lowering of the roofline. Window frames all had black matte trim, and were accented with chrome. Chrome also highlighted the door handles, bumpers, and side mouldings. Originally, it had been planned to use a smaller 2,458 cc turbocharged version of the PRV V6 (as seen in the Renault 25 and Alpine),[3] which had been successfully tested in 740s and 760s. In the smaller engine room of the 780, however, the engine overheated and the PRV V6 Turbo never appeared in a Volvo. In the first two years the 780 was available worldwide ('86 and '87) the 780 was available with the B280F V6 engine and a solid (live) rear axle. In the Italian market, originally only the Volkswagen built TD24 was to be offered, with 129 PS (95 kW),[3] but soon the V6 also became available and a 155 PS (114 kW) 2.0-litre turbo (B200ET) Italian tax special was also added in 1986. In the following year, the 780 came equipped with Volvo's independent rear suspension, which used self-leveling Nivomat shocks, to keep ride height correct. The B280F at this point had roughly 150 hp (110 kW), but the car itself was nearly 3,400 lb (1,500 kg). To address concerns over performance, Volvo introduced the B230FT+; a B230FT with Volvo's boost controller, Turbo+, increasing the engine output to 175 hp (130 kW). The following model year saw it increase to 188 hp (140 kW). In Italy, late 780s were available with the B204GT. This was a 16 Valve Turbo motor producing 200 hp (150 kW). In the car's final year, 1991, it was rebadged simply as "Coupé". At this point, the car came only in turbo guise. Volvo's official production total for the 780 is 8,518 cars built between 1986 and 1991. As before, a coupé would remain absent from Volvo's model line for several years, until the front-wheel drive C70 premiered in 1995 for the following model year. Introduced in 1991, the 940 was essentially a cosmetic reskin of the 740. All drivetrains, and most options available in the 940 had been available in the 740, with the exception of the 780 Coupe. The 940 was more closely related to the 740 than the 760, sharing the same dashboard, drivetrain choices, and sheet metal from the A-pillar forward. In contrast, the 960 was an evolution of the 760. The 760 / 960 front sheet metal, independent rear suspension, dashboard, and other interior features were all exclusive to the two upscale models. 1994-1995 Volvo 940 Turbo sedan (US) In the United States, the 1991 940 was offered in three versions: the 940GLE used a DOHC 16-valve version of the 2.3-litre engine with a 6000 rpm redline. The 940 Turbo used a turbocharged 2.3-litre engine, and the top-end 940SE (turbo) included body-coloured trim, and the premium features (leather, power seats/moonroof, etc.) as standard equipment. In 1991, the 940 GLE was downgraded with a 114 bhp 2.3-litre 4-cylinder engine and sold as the 940 GL (or basic 940 in some export markets). The 940 SE was altered in such a fashion that it was a 960 Turbo sold as the 940 SE, but the 940 Turbo remained largely unchanged. Production of the 940 series ended on February 5, 1998. This was the replacement for the 760. The 1991 960 was an evolutionary progression of the 1990 760, but it was also one of the first cars to feature the work of British designer Peter Horbury. The most significant change was that, in most markets, the 960 was offered with an all-new aluminum 24-valve DOHC inline six-cylinder engine, often referred to as "white block" in the Volvo community due to its bare aluminum block. Max power was 204 PS (150 kW) at 6,000 rpm. Some markets, such as Australia and Japan, saw 1991 960s equipped with the same B280E/F V6 engine (145 PS/107 kW at 5,100 rpm) that had powered the 1990 760.[4] The 1992 model year saw the U.S. introduction of the DOHC inline six-cylinder engine. For the Italian and Portuguese markets, the 960 was available with the 16v 2-litre turbo (190/200 PS, 140/147 kW) from September 1990 until September 1993 along with the inline sixes. Certain markets also received the 2.3 litre turbo 'Redblock' four, with 165 PS (121 kW) and the Volkswagen built D24TIC with 116 or 122 PS (85 or 90 kW).[5] Volvo 960 wagon (US) The 960 received incremental changes for the 1992, 1993, and 1994 model years. Most visible were the new more shapely seats, and redesigned seat-belts with hydraulic pretensioners for 1992. 1993 saw a new more ergonomic shifter, and in 1994 dual front airbags were introduced in some markets. The opaque sunroof was replaced by a sliding sunshade and glass window. The US version of the 3-litre six was tuned for more torque and a less peaky power delivery, with 181 PS (133 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 270 N·m (199 lb·ft) at 4,100 rpm (as opposed to 267 N·m/197 lb·ft at 4,300 rpm for the rest of the world).[6] For 1995, the 960 underwent radical changes. Most obvious was the more aerodynamic front end, and more body-coloured panels.[6] A smaller 2.5 version of the six (2,473 cc) was also added to the lineup, with 170 PS (125 kW) or 180 PS (132 kW) for the B6244FS version. Only the modular six-cylinder engines were available from model year 1995 on. Underneath, the front suspension was completely retooled to more closely match that of the 850. Indeed, 1995 to 1998 960s may use the same wheels as 1994 and newer front-wheel drive Volvo models. The rear suspension received a completely redesigned multi-link independent system. Instead of conventional coil springs, Volvo used a single transverse fibreglass leaf spring. The 1995 960 station wagon marked the first time ever that Volvo equipped one of its rear-wheel drive station wagons with an independent rear suspension. Boge's Nivomat self-levelling rear suspension system became an option rather than standard equipment. Some 1997 and all 1998 model year vehicles were renamed the Volvo S90/Volvo V90 to match the letter-and-number naming scheme now used on their other models. The 1992-94 Volvo 960s were built in Kalmar, Sweden. The very first Volvo 960 for the US-market rolled off the assembly line on August 12, 1991 as a 1992 model. The 1995 to 1998 960s were built in Göteborg, Sweden. The first 1995 960 was built on June 27, 1994. All US cars were equipped with an electronically controlled Aisin AW-series automatic transmission. Beginning in the 1995 model year, European cars with the 2.5 L engines were also available with a manual transmission, the so-called M90, a strong new design that was derived from the Volvo 850's transmission. With the demise of the 2.5 L engine, the M90 was paired with a detuned version (180 PS/132 kW)of the 3.0 L engine. The 740 SE only came in three colors, red, black, and white and had a special factory color-keyed body kit including front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and a spoiler on the sedan. The 740 SEs, along with the 740 Turbo sedan, were subsequently discontinued for 1992. Mechanically the 740 SE was the same as a normal 740 Turbo but with many options such as a power sunroof and leather seats as standard equipment. The SE badge was in fact one of the more confusing badges. In the US, the 940 SE was in fact a 960 Turbo with the four-cylinder B230FT engine, the 940 SE badge presumably chosen by Volvo in order to maintain the link between name and number of cylinders. In Sweden, the 940 SE was an ordinary non-turbo 940 with some optional extras as standard, most notably painted mirrors and bumpers. In the UK, the 940 SE was a 2-litre Turbo with some extras as standard aimed specifically at the company car market as 2-litre engines receive a tax benefit. The purpose of this article is to share a few thoughts on living with the 740, and some experiences and hints on carrying out some fairly basic maintenance jobs. Grateful thanks to Volvo Car UK for figures quoted which are from their publication. The most basic, and one of the most vital servicing jobs is changing the engine oil. I use Amsoil 10W/40 synthetic oil, and only genuine Volvo oil filters. Drain the oil when hot, and use only good quality oil and filters - engines are much more expensive. Remember to smear engine oil on the filter sealing ring, it makes removal much easier. Don't overtighten the filter, about V, - % of a turn after the seal contacts the block. Volvo recommend changing the spark plugs at 6,000 miles, but this seems a bit short, so I clean them and check the gap, renewing at 12,000 miles. A smear of copper grease on the threads is a good idea to prevent the possibility of the plugs seizing in the alloy head. Check the power steering fluid level at dipstick is in the reservoir mounted on the nearside inner wing. Inspect the battery, cheek the electrolyte levels and that the leads are clean and secure. Check the engine idle speed (carb engines - automatic 900rpm, manual 800rpm), and the CO emission level - not having a meter I leave this to a Dealer service. Although not specified in the service schedule, I also check the rear axle oil level. Volvo do not specify changing the rear axle oil, but I like to change it about every 2 years, using Amsoil 80W/90 synthetic. I'm a great believer in high-quality lubrication to prevent wear. Obviously the car must be as level as possible when checking oil levels to get an accurate reading. Whilst carrying out a service, I always have a thorough look at the underside, checking for oil leaks, rust, damage etc. Also the exhaust system, prop-shaft, fuel lines and tank and brake pipes should be inspected for leaks or damage. Problems are often solved more cheaply and easily if spotted early, plus of course there is the vital aspect of safety. Years ago I fitted Volvo oil pressure and temperature gauges in the dash. Now at 110,000 miles the oil pressure shows no sign of dropping. Volvo gauges are quite easy to fit, and of course, match the rest of the dash perfectly - be careful choosing gauges, some fit the right side of the dash, and some the left, so not all combinations are possible. I wrote some time ago about changing the water pump and the coolant. One point worth mentioning again is to remember to secure the pump fasteners finger tight only, then lever the pump firmly upwards whilst tightening the nuts and bolts. The rubber seal between the pump and the head must be compressed, otherwise leaks will surely occur. Use a 50/50 mixture of Volvo coolant and water year round to prevent both freezing and corrosion. On the V6 engine this is even more important as this engine has an alloy crank-case with wet liners sealed top and bottom. if corrosion occurs in the water jacket, coolant can leak past the bottom seal into the sump, it's then time for a new engine. Four years ago I had to renew the rear discs because of rusting (strange because the car was used almost every day). The procedure to change the rear discs is as follows:- jack up the car and remove the wheel, for safety axle stands should be used rather than just the jack. Tap out the two retaining pins which hold the pads in the caliper using a hammer and small punch. Press each pad away from the disc using pliers, and pull the pads out of the caliper with antisqueal shims if fitted. Be careful not to breathe in the brake dust. Clean up the caliper with a damp rag, or brake cleaner. Next, remove the two caliper securing bolts (the two nearest to the hub). Do not disconnect the hydraulic hose. Tie the caliper up out of the way so that no strain is placed on the flexible hose. Remove the wheel locating pin. Make sure the hand-brake is fully off and pull off the disc, tapping it free with a soft faced mallet if necessary. The rear disc incorporates the hand-brake drum, so take the opportunity to inspect the hand-brake linings, and to clean these and the operating mechanism. Assembly, as they say, is the reverse of the dismantling procedure, but several points are worth mentioning: 1) If fitting new discs, remove the preservative with a cloth and white spirit or similar solvent. 2) When re-fitting the calipers make sure the flexible hose is not twisted. new bolts should be used. Apply Loctite or similar thread locking compound to the bolts and torque up to 431b ft (58Nm). 3) Check that the pistons move freely in the caliper. 4) Apply copper grease to both sides of the anti-squeal shims and to the back of the pads, taking care not to contaminate the friction material. Apply copper grease to the retaining pins to facilitate future removal. Front brake pad renewal goes as follows: jack up, remove the wheel and preferably support the car on axle stands. Remove the caliper lower guide pin bolt; on Girling calipers also slacken the upper guide pin bolt. You can now pivot the caliper upwards and remove the rubber bellows. Support the caliper to avoid straining the flexible hose. DO NOT press the brake pedal with the caliper removed - this will cause much sorrow. Lift the pads and anti-squeal shims from the caliper bracket. Note the position of the pads if they are to be re-used, so that they are replaced in the same position. NB if any of the 4 pads are worn down to minimum thickness, all 4 must be replaced. Clean the caliper and bracket as previously mentioned. If new pads are to be fitted, press the pistons back into the calipers using pliers and taking care not to damage the dust seals. Apply copper grease to the anti-squeal shim and the back of the pad, and replace pad and shim on the caliper bracket. Carefully swing the caliper down over the pads making sure that the antirattle spring in the caliper is correctly located. similar to the lower guide pin bolt insert it and tighten to 251b ft (34Nm). Press the brake pedal several times to bring the pads to the surface of the disc before you drive the car for the first time otherwise a nasty shock may result at the first corner. What do I like most and least about the 740? Most - after nearly 11 years, the body-work is almost entirely rust-tree The car is roomy: comfortable, easy to work on and has proved incredibly reliable. The running gear is superbly engineered, and capable of massive mileages of trouble-free motoring. 21 of the 40 highest-mileage cars on Volvo's own list are 700's. Least - after my 1983 244GLE I found the brakes disappointing, and still do. Even compared with the pool car which I drive (Escort diesel) they are less firm and positive. If pushed, eg when using the kick-down on the auto transmission the engine is rough and noisy, certainly not in the same league as, say, the BMW 6-cylinders. Performance, certainly on the carburettor version is adequate rather than exciting - very different with the turbo versions of course. Overall - an excellent and very satisfactory car. The new car was launched simultaneously in nine European locations on 2nd February 1982. Initially, the sole representative was the 760GLE saloon powered by the 156bhp V6 engine carried over from the 260 Series. A new automatic transmission was fitted, the AW71 four speed unit which improved fuel consumption by up to 20% on long runs. There followed the 122bhp turbocharged and intercooled 6-cylinder diesel engine, originating from Volkswagen. This was then considered a very quiet unit by current diesel engine standards, and made the 760 one of the world's fastest diesel powered cars. Volvo decided against using independent rear suspension for the 700 Series and went for a design unique to themselves, ensuring constant track width under all conditions. There were two suspension arms to absorb longitudinal forces, a cross strut to accommodate lateral forces, and two torque struts (over and under the axle) to counteract torsional forces resulting from acceleration and braking. The torque struts were attached to a sub-frame, mounted to the chassis on rubber bushes. In 1983 the appeal of the 760GLE was widened again by the introduction of a third engine option, the 2.3 litre (B23ET) turbocharged and intercooled unit developing 173bhp. This higher-powered version had a stiffer chassis and harder shock absorbers to improve handling at higher speeds. Transmissions then available were a manual 4-speed box with electrically operated overdrive and the previously mentioned AW71 automatic unit. Both transmissions had cast aluminium cases in the interest of weight reduction. Another interesting technical innovation was the use of sliding front brake calipers, which enable the pads to be checked without the necessity to remove the wheels. Attention to paint processes and rustproofing was of a very high order; obviously vital in a country where such vast quantities of salt are applied to the roads in winter. This contributed to the average life expectancy of a Volvo approaching 20 years at a time when that of most other cars had a life expectancy of about 10 years. An important development took place in 1984 - the introduction of the first 740 model, the 740GLE. This had the two advantages of being less expensive than the 760GLE, whilst appearing almost identical. The 740GLE had the B23E engine, of 2.3 litres capacity and developing 131bhp. The 740 was priced roughly mid-way between the 240 and the 760. The 740GLE was subsequently joined by the 740GL, which was powered by a 2.3 litre carburetted engine, and had a slightly lower level of trim. A further very important development took place in 1985 with the introduction of the 740/760 estates. The estates have proved to be a vital and increasing component in 700 Series sales, in 1989 over 40% of 740 sales were estates. In the same year, the 740 was equipped with the new generation low friction engines, including the 182bhp turbocharged and intercooled engine. A diesel version was added, which was turbocharged, but unlike the version fitted to the 760 did not have charge air-cooling, which reduced the power to 109bhp. Engines with catalytic converters and Lambda Sond were introduced in various European countries in 1986. On the engine front, a new V6 for the 760, the B280 appeared, and there were large-scale changes to the B230 engine, these included a microprocessor controlled ignition system designed to improve both performance and fuel consumption. Electronic Traction Control and ABS (antilock system) brakes became options on certain models within the range. In 1987 an updated version of the 760 arrived. The most obvious change externally was the softer rounded front of the car. On the saloons Volvo Multilink independent rear suspension was introduced to further improve comfort and driving characteristics. Micro-processor controlled ECC (Electronic Climate Control) further enhanced the in-car environment. Production of the 760 was concentrated in Volvo's plant at Kalmar. At the Geneva Motor Show in 1988 Volvo presented the 740GLT. The engine was substantially different from others in the range being a 2.3 litre unit with twin overhead camshafts operating 16 valves via maintenance free hydraulic tappets. The engine also featured two balance shafts rotating at twice crankshaft speed, designed to reduce vibrations. Power was increased to 155bhp. 1989 saw the 740 Series receive a fronted face-lift. Under the bonnet was a new generation turbocharged engine, the B230FT. This engine had a new more compact and efficient turbocharger which reduced the delay in response when accelerating (turbo lag) by some 40% The newly designed exhaust manifold helped to power the turbocharger more efficiently, and particularly improved lower and mid range torque. In 1990 the 700 Series was subjected to a rear-end re-design and had its name changed to the 900 Series. Engine options in the 940 Series were much the same as in the latter 740 models. In the 960 however, a technically sophisticated new straight 6.3 litre unit with twin cams and 24 valves replaced the V6 engine. Finally a few words about what must surely be the most exclusive and attractive 700 Series model to be produced. This was the 780, a 2-door coupe based on the 700 floor pan. Although recognisably a 700, there are no body panels in common with either the 740 or 760. Most unfortunately Volvo never made this beautiful model in right hand drive form. A 129bhp turbo-diesel engine, similar to that fitted to the 760 powered a version for the Italian market. The car was equipped to an extremely high standard; the motorised front seats incorporating a memory function aided entry to the back seat, so that the seat could be moved forward and would return automatically to the correct position. For the American market in 1990, two engine options were offered, the 2.8 litre V6 developing 145bhp and the 2.3 litre turbocharged and intercooled unit, with 188bhp. For 1991 the V6 was not offered. From 1988 independent rear suspension was fitted, and a 21 gallon (USA) fuel tank. The servicing schedule supplied with the V6 engine model specifies that the spark plugs should be changed at 25,000-mile intervals! Transmission was the 4-speed automatic. Production of the 780 lasted from model year 1985-86 through to 1991, and a total of around 8,500 cars were produced. I am most grateful to Volvo Cars of North America for the brochures, which they were good enough to supply; also for information from two Club Members who are fortunate enough to own 780's, one in Berkshire and the other in Paris. The Swedish marque has been responsible for some of the biggest safety innovations over the years and all of its products come with a wide array of features and systems to protect occupants and other road users. Volvo is also known for its pared down Scandinavian design, and a minimalist styling approach is evident in the cabins of its latest models. The S40 saloon and its V50 estate counterpart are based on the same chassis as the latest Ford Focus and share its polished driving dynamics. They're popular second hand cars and buyers after something even sportier might also like the C30 hatch launched in 2006. There's also the larger S60 saloon and the S80 which is bigger still but many still associate Volvo with big estate cars first and foremost, so the V70 gets plenty of attention on the pre-owned market. With tonnes of carrying capacity, the V70 is an old school family estate and still a strong alternative to the various MPV options that are around these days. There's also the option to buy a used Volvo 4x4 and that means the XC90 and its smaller brother, the XC60. Both are aimed at family buyers like the V70 and do a good job of mixing MPV practicality with that 4x4 feel, although these aren't the vehicles for serious off-roading. Volvo used cars remain very popular on the used second hand market and it's little wonder given their safety levels and family-friendly design.
