the car serviced at a Volvo specialist, and latterly a local garage, always with Mobil One oil (which it has had since new). We decided on the T5 version because of the effortless performance, luxury, and safety, whilst still returning reasonal MPG (we have been averaging over 30). Clearly it is not a sportscar, but it never feels underpowered no matter how many people and luggage are being carried - There is a tow pack fitted, but we have only very occasionally towed a small trailer - these make effortless towcars, with the substantial torque peak corresponding to 60 mph. Being a manual version, the road tax remains reasonable with a CO2 rating of 225g, such a lot more fun than a diesel with little financial penalty! Over the course of our ownership, we have replaced a number of parts including the air conditioning pump, alternator, suspension bushes, shock absorbers, brakes, and injectors (all with receipts), we were careful to choose a car that had been built after the problems with the electronic throttle module had been resolved, and have never regretted our choice - it runs as well as ever! It is now `nicely run in` at 217,000 miles, and we are sadly selling before being able to claim a Volvo Club Silver Badge at 300,000 miles. I have no doubt that it will easily reach this mileage and beyond, as it barely uses 0-40 viscosity oil which is a testament to the longevity of Volvos. Obviously it is not a new car but one could confidently expect to enjoy many more years of faithful service at a tiny fraction of the £31,000 purchase price new. with no advisories valid til October 2012 (less than 1000 miles travelled since) Taxed until October 2012 Although Spartan by modern standards when supplied to its 1st owner by Drayton Motors Volvo of Chester this Volvo was well appointed for the era with the following specification: Auto box with winter economy and sports modes Electric Windows and mirrors Sunroof Metallic paint Front Heated seats Built in fold away child booster seat ½ leather interior Mechanics: It is often considered that the 850 is the vehicle that gave Volvo its reputation as a high-end auto maker in North America due to the level of features available in this model that were not offered in previous models. At the time of its development, the 850 was regarded as one of the largest engineering endeavors in Sweden . 20 years from launch they are now revered for their solidity and longevity with many examples well past the million mile mark. With just 60k and thus having averaged just over 3K pa this example is only just run in. The MOT is valid until October 2012 and was issued with NO ADVISORIES. Last serviced approx 5k ago and has had a new radiator recently .She drives beautifully with no knocks or bangs and the engine and auto box are both smooth and responsive. Exterior: The dark metallic green bodywork is in good order with only a few minor blemishes to detract, the worst being a scratch on the n/side passenger door. The colour is a very vibrant and looks fantastic polished and waxed. All wheel arches are solid with no signs of corrosion. The only are of paintwork that is not very good is the rear spoiler the top edge of which is suffering from lacquer lift. The wheeltrims are the original Volvo items and are in excellent condition. All four wheels are fitted with Michelin tyres with plenty of life left . Over all a very presentable car for nearly 18 years of age . Interior: The interior is timewarp and a very nice place to be with a real classic Scandinavian feel . I have driven several hundred miles in one sitting in this car and the seats are some of the most comfortable I have ever come across. The half leather heated seats are in very good condition with no rips and only minor wear on the outside edge of the drivers seat where the previous elderly owner has got in and out . The only area of trim that is less than perfect is the glove box as the bottom hinges are broken (common 850 problem) however this cannot be seen with the glove box closed. Everything else is complete and undamaged. The carpets and headlining are in good condition and the boot area is clean and undamaged. All electrics work Provenance and supporting documentation: I purchased this car from a retired Volvo service manager who had know this car from new, having supplied it to the original keeper and then his neighbour who he bought it from in 2001 with just 26k on the clock.
